FYI – New York State and New York City have no sales tax on clothing, shoes, etc. for items under $110.00

Apple is not applying tax free in its website to pickup or shipping in Florida. Best Buy is applying.

Not a citizen, recently moved to US. Why do people have such strong opinions about Florida? If you don’t live there who cares?? I don’t live there so I don’t care.

Because people are jealous… and also pissed off of living in a cold state.

Florida has a lot of negative baggage associated with it.

And evidently people care enough to post about it. To be honest, it’s a very American thing to do.

Some of the people with strong opinions do actually live there, to be clear. It is a fairly large state in terms of both area and population, so there are a decent amount of people there.

Because it’s funny! There are so many news stories that start with “A Florida man…” that it became a running joke. https://floridaman.com/

It’s 2024 now. You cannot go far with $1.5k cap on computers. I hope they can increase that limit to $2.5k soon.

It’s mostly meant for students and 1.5k is perfectly fine for that. Pretty nice actually considering most states only provide tax free weeks for clothing.

Could someone confirm whether a purchase of a MacBook Air (priced below $1500) would be eligible for this deal? Thank you!

You will be fine. Just order from best buy as they have them on sale now and shouldn’t see the sales tax. I was going to buy oe but still have mot current version with m2 processor.

Could someone confirm whether a purchase of a MacBook Air (< $1500, personal use) would be eligible for this deal? Thanks!

Shouldn’t be an issue.

why is there sales tax on clothing to begin with

I mean… Why wouldn’t there be?

It’s an item for sale. It is taxable. I could make a bunch of political arguments about Florida being bad, but this isn’t one of them. They have sales tax on clothing.

NJ and few states do not tax clothing. Maybe that’s where he’s coming from.

Massachusetts doesn’t tax necessity items like groceries and clothing under $150 price tag

Which would mean if it doesn’t happen where Ian lives, then it makes no sense for it to happen anywhere else. Ian apparently can’t wrap his mind around the fact that different areas charge sales tax on different things.

For example, thirteen US states tax groceries. That also means the other ones don’t. But Ian apparently can’t imagine that our something.

NJ has state income taxes, Florida doesn’t.

And that’s doing the exact thing I already criticized. You have your personal experiences and can’t imagine anything different.

Florida. You can’t drive anywhere without someone panhandling at a traffic light, or asking for a cigarette outside 7-eleven.

So you’re doing the same thing I already criticized. You feel one way and see one thing, therefore you can’t imagine anything different.

I know many criminals who violently attack innocent people and then are set free by Florida’s government. I’ve literally seen it.

If we’re going to complain about sale tax, #1 is that it should be shown as part of the price like in other countries. If a shop/site can calculate your tax based on your location when you check out, they can change the price shown to you to reflect taxes.

Disagree. This hides the government’s take. For example see Jet blue arguments against the taxes buried inside the airfare.

January 2, 2024 15:30

…this is a stupid reason.

First, you’re wrong. Even in other countries, the receipt gives a breakdown of how much tax is for the item(s). The normal person can just…read a receipt.

Second, you can just look up tax rates for a particular area. It’s not hidden on the receipt or on the actual laws that are published by the government.

Third, what you’re saying is hiding the government take. Instead of actually posting the prices that are going to be charged, you want to hide that so that people can’t see until they get to the register and get the receipt. Or, they have to do math to find out beforehand.
