Our Verdict
Walgreen’s is very YMMV on Visa gift cards; some won’t allow credit cards and many will limit you to $500 max in Visa gift cards per day. If you have a complying Walgreen’s, this could be a good deal while you maximize the 5% cashback on Citi Dividend or on the Old Blue Cash card.

Got it today. Just pick a $5-$500 Walgreens GC off the rack and tell them you want $5 on it. The $5 comes off if you give them your loyalty card

Was able to buy four $500 VGCs, two at a time to get two $5 WAG gift cards. Got lucky for once.
I’ve tried this a few times and usually no one knows how to even do the deal(they can’t get the $5 gc to activate) and the one time they figured it out I came up against the $500 max. But since it’s the only pharm in my area that even lets me buy vgcs with cc, I’ll be paying them a few visits these next months anyway

Tried to buy four $500 gift cards yesterday and got shut down. Said the limit was one. Gonna go back today and try to buy 2. Wondering how they can enforce a limit of one when the ad says you need to buy 2 to get in on the deal.
Mine says it’s a limit of $500 per day, so they just tell me to buy 2 gift cards totalling $500 – of course this isn’t what I want. Some will let you do it, but it’s hardly worth the hassle – Walgreens aren’t ubiquitous near me.
This has been my experience exactly. The limit isn’t 1 gift card per transaction- it’s a limit of a total of $500. So they just say that you can buy 2, you just have to partially load them, up to a total of $500. Of course, for us, this means an extra purchase fee which wipes out the deal.
In the past, I have had success explaining to them that the limit of $500 is meant to be for fraud purposes, and it isn’t fair to enforce it when it impacts our ability to take advantage of their own promotion- at least not without a corresponding financial loss. This has worked with a few managers for me when this deal comes around.
I argued with the manager that the deal said 2 visa gift cards. He initially said I could get 1 vgc and 1 mcgc which doesnt make sense.
I argued that about false advertisement and if it’s policy, the 2 vgcs would go through.
If did go through! 🙂
