Gift Card Reselling: Cardcash Parnters with eBay to Exchange Unwanted Gift Cards

Cardcash is partnering with eBay to allow users to trade in their unwanted gift cards into eBay e-gift cards at https://ebay.cardcash.com/. This trade-in offer is valid for the gift cards of over 200 different retailers that can all be traded in for eBay e-gift cards, just in time for the big holiday gift card season.

Around this time last year, Cardcash partnered with Walmart to be able to trade gift cards into Walmart e-gift cards and the partnership went on until after the holiday season, when it was discontinued. This year, they’ve partnered with eBay instead.

Key Points To New Site

  • Most gift cards get you 4% more in the form of an eBay gift card versus if you sell to cardcash.com for cash payout
  • Max payout on the site is 95% (for Walmart gift cards)
  • You can sell eGiftcards to this new website
  • You do not need to mail-in physical gift cards
  • You’ll receive an eBay eGiftcard in printable format, not a physical card
  • Your eBay e-gift card will be emailed to you once your order has been approved; approval time can take up to 1 business day
  • Gift cards with any balance can be sold on this site (as well as on cardcash.com directly)

Limits

The most you can sell to the new site is $500 gift card face value. Even selling $500 of one brand and $500 of another will not work.

It’s possible that you can create two separate sell-orders of $500 each or make a second sell-order after the first one is complete, but we don’t know if they’ll approve it or not.

Does Using The Site Make Sense?

As noted, when exchanging for an eBay gift card you’ll usually get 4% more than when selling for cash. It can sometimes be more – for example, Walmart gift cards will net you 95% of their face value and only 90% when sold for cash to cardcash.com, a 5% increase.

It’s imperative that you compare all rates on Giftcardgranny or Giftcardwiki as Cardcash may not be offering the best rates to begin with. It’s also very important to remember that there are many ways to buy eBay gift cards at a discount and the 4% additional payout may not be worth it.

Sweet Spot – Electronic Gift Cards

The sweet spot for making use of the Cardcash/eBay option is if you have e-gift cards to sell. Depending on which exchanges you deal with and whether you have bulk status or not, electronic gift cards often net you 5% less than physically mailed-in cards. Also, some exchanges won’t accept e-gift cards at all.

Using Cardcash/eBay, you can end up with an extra 9% or 10%, versus selling the electronic cards cash payout to cardcash.com.

Example #1:

  • Sell $100 Toys R Us physical gift card to cardcash.com for cash payout and you’ll get $80.
  • Sell a Toys R Us e-gift card to cardcash.com for cash payout and get $75.
  • Sell a Toys R Us e-gift card to ebay.cardcash.com and get $84 eBay gift card – $9 extra.

Example #2:

  • Sell $100 Walmart physical gift card to cardcash.com for cash payout and you’ll get $90.
  • Sell a Walmart e-gift card to cardcash.com for cash payout and get $85.
  • Sell a Toys R Us e-gift card to ebay.cardcash.com and get $95 eBay gift card – $10 extra.

These are just two scenarios where the Cardcash/eBay option becomes something to consider. However, more often you’ll find that the difference is less than 9-10%. Or you’ll find another exchange which is paying out more and it won’t be worth it.

In the above two examples:

  • Toys R Us e-gift cards can be sold to Cardpool for 82% cash value – you’re only getting an extra $2 using the Cardcash/eBay option and it’s probably not worth it.
  • Walmart e-gift cards can be sold to Saveya f0r 93% cash value – you’re only getting an extra $2 using the Cardcash/eBay option and it’s probably not worth it.

Final Thoughts

Given that they added the $500 limit this year, it appears that they are targeting more the common folk who have a few $25 gift cards that they don’t need and not real gift card resellers (this makes sense).

In the end, it’s probably not worth it in most cases for someone who has other means of buying eBay gift cards at a discount.

We haven’t found any press release on this subject yet and it will likely come soon. I found out about this new reselling option from a one-off mention on this eBay page.

Can you elaborate on the $500 limit? Is this for each transaction, or a lifetime limit?

Not sure why cardcash ever charged more for e-gift cards. One would think the cost structure is lower.

Are the received ebay gift cards secondhand gift cards or new gift cards? If they are secondhand gift cards, wouldn’t you have to use it within 45 days?
