Hy-Vee: Get $10 Gift Card with $125 Visa Gift Purchase

The Offer

Via Frequentmiler

  • Buy $125 or more in Visa gift cards and get a free $10 Hy-Vee gift card

The Fine Print

  • Valid 12/1 – 12/14

Our Verdict

Hy-Vee stores carry $500 Visa gift cards, though the do limit us to $500 per transaction. If you have some grocery spend to rack up, this can be a good way of getting an extra $10 gift card from it.

Yeah, I’d like to see it in print.
DP: I bought a $500 MC GC today (SE Iowa) and the casher asked “cash or debit” to which of I of course replied debit. No problem using a credit card.

I would like to see where this originated from. I have called a dozen hyvee’s and none of them are doing this. I think this was a mis print for the previous promo?

Does anyone have a link to this promotion? My local Hy-Vee didn’t know anything about it and I can’t seem to find the deal in the weekly Hy-Vee ads for my local stores.

As others have said, the limit varies per store, not just the $500 in the description above. My local HyVee had a limit of $999 in gift cards per day when I got the $10 gift card per $100 VGC. I had no problems paying with a credit card, although it did require a manager override who asked for and verified my ID.

I’m not sophisticated enough to do manufactured spending, so I just used the cards for spending at HyVee, Costco and WalMart.

After the fee, it’s essentially a $4 or $5 freebie on the gift card and I can use this to meet some of the spend required on a new credit card.

Hy-Vee accepts the The Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express which offers a whopping 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets. They also accept a variety of cards at 3% cashback like the The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express or Santander Bank Bravo.
The last time, they did this, I loaded up the truck but $10.00 HyVee GC per $100.00 VGC, So this is not quite as hot. I used the HyVee $10.00 GCs at the HyVee Gas convenience store going inside and depositing $30.00 in Hyvee GCs and getting about $8.00 in gas and the overpayment was returned to me in cash. The next visit, I deposited $40.00 in HyVee GCs gassing up the car and pocketing $26.00 cash.
IF I recall correctly, the VCG activation fee is $5.95 for the MetaBank VCGs. I believe they also offer Visa GC from another vendor on the same display.
With the right manager, I was able to stack multiple VCGs in one purchase reducing the number of transactions the credit card company sees. I have done 2x$500.00 in one transaction at my HyVee.
I always toss on some groceries with the VCGs creating odd transaction amounts.

you have had some good deals! for others reading, remember the blue cash preferred isn’t 6% cash back. The annual fee is going up to 95, and even before that, the max % you get is 4.75 on the 75AF or 4.4 on the newer $95 AF.

Also I have had luck in using credit cards at hyvee for gift cards by using samsung pay. As long as its not a big purchase they don’t seem to care.

The last hyvee offer (in oct/nov was just like this but it was for $50 gift cards or more IIRC. I was able to get $10 for samsung pay first transaction, and 3% back with SPG/Amtrak.

Now I will attempt to earn a higher tier on samsung pay and hopefully be able to get an override. Do not purchase the restaurant visa cards they can be very hard to liquidate. I also have a hard time finding values other than 25, 50, 200, and 500. 500 seems to be the best.

My local credit union sells visa gift cards up to 500 with a 2.99 fee and can be purchased with any major credit card but im not about to jeopardize that relationship and do that more than a few times a year!!!!!

I’d also advocate that if you are unable to get the cash back from HV gift cards like Jeff H did, at least link your hyvee card perks card to Plenti, often times there are coupons you can add to your hyvee card that have matching plenti offers that stack, and if you pay with a ED/EDP/PRG it can get even sweeter. Also noting that Plenti has a 50% transfer bonus until dec 31st, so your 4.5 MR points per dollar spent now turn into 6.75 cents per point value, definitely good for RiteAid, atnt, Mobil, and Macys if you find a good sale.

Has anyone had issues using CC for GC purchases? Some locations have it obviously posted that they require cash/debit, but last time they had this deal in the Fall I used my Ink+ card and it seemed like the register was hard coded to decline it. The cashier wasn’t familiar with their policy, and since they’re employee owned it varies per store.

Larger amounts are not hard coded against CC, bur are hard coded manager override required.

All locations around here do NOT accept CC for VGC/MGC/AGC. Hy-vee are independently run so this is location specific.
