Hyatt Changes Cancellation Policy To 48 Hours From January 1st 2018- Elites Excluded

Hyatt has followed MarriottHilton & IHG in announcing a change to their cancellation policy. For bookings that are made or changed after January 1st, 2018 you will need to cancel your reservations at least 48 hours in advance to avoid a cancellation fee. Previously you needed to cancel within 24 hours. The following elites:

  • Explorist
  • Globalist
  • Lifetime Globalist

Will continue to be able to cancel up to 24 hours before arrival as long as the individual’s hotel cancellation policy is 48 hours. Hyatt does note that each individual property might set their own cancellation policy, for example some Hyatt properties already require cancellations 90 days in advance. I’ve noted in previous posts that I believe that these changes are lead by hotel chains wanting to experiment with dyanmic pricing and last minute booking websites/apps without cannibalizing the bookings they already have (e.g preventing cancellations/rebookings). It’ll also be interesting to see if this change is also implement for corporate bookings as last minute changes there occur frequently and most corporate bookers would want that level of flexibility.

World of HURT continues with bad policy. This tells me that the “Discoverist” is pretty much worth nothing. How low can they go?

All these policy changes are pushing me to just do last minute (same day) bookings for hotels – often enough my schedule changes due to whatever project is having the most immediate issues crop up.
