ICYMI: Citi Platinum Select & Barclaycard Aviator 10% Rebates Do Not Stack

When reading Kenny’s post yesterday about an unexpected (and unwanted) product conversion, I realized I had buried some kind of important information in a post – I’ve decided to republish some of that post below so that people are fully aware.

The Citi Platinum Select, Aviator Red & Silver cards from Barclaycard all come with a 10% rebate when you redeem your American Airline miles. You’re limited to 10,000 miles in rebates per year, we weren’t sure if having two of these cards would stack (e.g 20% back and 20,000 miles or even just 10% back but a cap of 20,000 miles).

Reddit user ffflllyyyeeerrr has the Aviator Red & Platinum Select and recently redeemed 25,000 miles, this is what their rebate looked like:

From this we can tell that you don’t get 20% back, only 10% at a time which is split between the two cards. This didn’t tell us if the total cap was 10,000 miles or 20,000 miles though.

Reader Glenn recently redeemed 165,000 miles and has both cards. Unfortunately he only received a total rebate of 10,000 miles which means that you cannot stack this bonus in anyway (screenshot below, the total of 12,000 is because he received a spending bonus of 2,000 miles separate to the rebate). If your experience confirms Glenn’s (or is in contradiction with Glenn’s) we’d love to know in the comments.

As you can see this shows that the rebates do not stack at all. Even if you have both cards, you’re limited to 10,000 miles in rebates and 10% back – although this is weirdly split at 5% for each card.

I have a converted Barclays US Airways card and a Citi AA business card; just redeemed 270,000 miles and capped out at 10k miles bonus. So your suspicions look right.

I’m going to assume they are splitting the rebate 5% for each card to prevent stacking. Because Citi does not split the rebate when you have multiple Citi cards.
