The Fine Print

  • IHG® Rewards Club members must be logged in to receive 15% savings.

  • Bookings for The Venetian® and The Palazzo® hotels are excluded from discounts.
  • This offer is subject to the general IHG® Rewards Club membership Terms and Conditions.

Our Verdict

When you book a cash & points rate with IHG, you are effectively buying the extra points needed. This means if you refund the book you’ll get it all back in points, this lets you basically purchase IHG points at a discount. They have offered 25% discounts in the past but under this 15% discount it will usually be as follows:

  • Save 5,000 points & pay $40 ($34 with this discount)
  • Save 10,000 points & pay $70 ($59.50 with this discount)
  • Save 15,000 points & pay $99 ($84.15 with this discount)
  • Save 20,000 points & pay $125 (106.25 with this discount)

The rates will vary a bit from hotel to hotel, the best option is when you save 20,000 points for $115 (86.25 with this discount) this makes the points cost 0.43125¢ each.

Ehh i got a letter today from Chase. Currently had the $49 AF card for 3 years. The annual free night will be redeemable only up to 40k points which is ok with me. I’m sure the new card has no limit.

I cannot get it to work. Tried several hotels in different countries for April 2-3, but it is showing standard co-pay without 15% discount. For example, for 25,000 night it lists 10,000 + $99. Has anyone have luck getting this to work?

Same here.
I love these deals and its a good time to stock up for the 5K-10K points break nights. But i dont see/get the 15% off when checking out.

With 0.43125 cent, a 70k highend hotel still come out to be $300+. Since they increased max points to 70k, it kinda negate the discount. IHG is very dead to me. Unless there’s a very very specific property i’m going like maldives or what not, one can easily book under $300. IHG is dead to me. Their status is a joke.

the reason people like these deals is: you can make a Cash+Points booking (discounted here) and the cancel the booking. You don’t get your cash back, but you keep the points you “purchased”.

At <0.5cpp, it's a good deal – probably the cheapest way to buy IHG points.

It's not a "smart investment strategy" but if you need to buy 10K miles (or whatever), it's one of the best times to do it.

jack. u say that because ur expectations are wack and ur not looking broadly enough. u can say that about HH and Delta Pesos as well. every program has a strength and its ur job to figure it out. its possible that the strengths dont play in your favor so the program could be, in fact, dead to you, but ur missing out by not being flexible.

IHG strong points are the low level ghetto properties for dirty cheap. but why would u stay at those nasty properties? because its a high end motel 6 which is better than motel 6 itself. meaning, I would do ghetto holiday inn with BS front desk customer service similar to an overseas call center vs actually going to motel 6 which is equivalent to walking into a prison.

this is critical when u are globetrotting and hitting up positioning flights or excursion layovers and visiting a city very quickly. u dont need Intercontinental flossy fresh plush for that.

ur talking about 70k high end hotel? ur doing it wrong. u will never get good shit for high end IHG or HH. u only get that with SPG and Hyatt.
