Update: American Express are accepting ITIN again.
American Express allows people to apply with an ITIN in place of an SSN, recently readers reported that newer application pages were rejecting ITIN but the older style forms (e.g referral pages) were still accepting them. I wanted to find out if this was a policy change from American Express or an error with the new application pages and received the following response:
I looked into this and we’re in the process of updating our digital application. The capability to accept ITIN is included in the enhancements planned for year end. In the meantime, consumers with an ITIN can apply by phone (1-800-243-3888).
