Issues With American Express Offers [More Information & Possible Work Arounds?]

Update: It seems that when an offer is added to a card it will be removed from all other log ins. It seems to do this via your social security number or name (e.g if SSN matches it will be removed even if name isn’t the same and if there is no SSN but the name matches it will also eb removed). Doesn’t seem to matter if the person adding the offer is the primary cardholder or an authorized user. Previously this wouldn’t happen in the cards were under different logins.

Reader Rene has suggested trying to use this link to add offers. This brings up an ‘autumn offers’ tab and it seems like that contains offers that had disappeared previously. Another possible option is using multiple browser trick discussed here.

Original post: There are a few reports coming in from readers regarding an issue with American Express offers. The issue seems to be that if you add an offer to an authorized user account, that same offer will be removed on the primary cardholder/other authorized users if the name is the same. This is happening even if you’re using different logins/no SSN.  At the moment this is developing, the aim of the post is to get more data points and clarity to what is actually happening.

DP: I needed to buy something on Amazon today but needed it to be on my AmEx Biz Plat. I found that I had added the 3x offer to my AmEx Biz Gold already and didn’t have it available on the Plat (same login). Went ahead with purchase on the Plat anyway and I just got the email “Great news! You just used your Amex Offer”

I haven’t gotten the actual points yet of course, but it makes me wonder if the new policy might cross cards for the same login/person/SSN. FWIW, my Gold is under my SSN and the Plat is under my EIN.

I have been using the multiple browser trick for years. Today was the first time it didn’t work for me (on the Staples offer)

I agree the Staples offer would only add to one card but I tested useless AOs, Boston Market and Levi’s, and those can still be added to multiple cards. So it appears Amex is selectively blocking the best offers from being added to multiple cards.

My first encounter of this and I’m not happy.

Had the $5 off $25 Staples offer on many of my cards, opened in many of my tabs, only worked on one of them. The workaround doesn’t work.

Is this the end of an era?

This is REALLY bad news. I had the same thing happen. 🙁 Is there any work-around? Trying incognito mode now but I have a feeling AmEx has closed this down…. Kudos to them, but sucks for us.

so what’s the verdict? Sounds like it’s about name. not ssn. isn’t it?

somebody has completely different names but same ssn and have offers disappear?

William, is Autumn offers still working for you? Has anyone come up with a solution to this problem that works? Appreciate all your help!

Not working for me anymore, it just shows the regular offers for me.

AMEX needs customers like my 87 year old father whose card said “cardmember since 1965,” because he would never bother to look at these offers and is satisfied with 1 point per $. But they don’t know how to avoid losing them.
He went to buy my stepmother a very expensive piece of jewelry and they declined the purchase because it was outside his normal spending pattern even though he talked to them on the phone.

Ends 53 years of card membership.
Good job AMEX. How is your stock so high?

I’m still seeing the Autumn offers.

Thanks – the autumn trick worked for me for BBB, Crate and Barrel, and Banana Republic.

I had Best Buy on at least card, but think it’s redemption limit was hit. Didn’t add it when I saw it (waited about a day until I had time to research the new quirks for multiple cards), and it’s on no cards now.

Worked for me. The 3x Amazon offer wouldn’t show up on bbp until I tried this workaround.

 William Charles,

I noticed that I was able to edit my comment about 10 minutes after writing it (and I could even still edit it now).

Is this a bug or did you mean to let people edit their comments indefinitely?

Obviously you can do whatever you want but don’t you think it’s better to have a cut-off (ie 5 minutes)?
