Issues With Using Metabank-issued Visa Gift Cards At Walmart & Kroger

Lots of people are reporting issues when attempting to use Metabank Visa gift cards at Walmart or Kroger for things like billpay or money orders. Previously, the Metabank-issued cards were typically considered debit cards and were able to be used for money-like transactions.

For the past few days, there seems to be a limit in some/all Walmart locations that each swipe must be under $100 or $50 (varying reports). And there’s also some issues with using these cards at Kroger as well.

These new issues are only with the Metabank and Sunrise cards, not with cards from US Bank. (Vanilla/Bancorp have always been difficult to use at Walmart for many years.)

I haven’t been playing the Visa gift card game lately, but thought it worth a headsup to be aware of potential issues. Feel free to discuss tips and suggestions in the comments below.

IS this the reason for Metabank prepaid Mastercard gift cards automatically swiping as credit. You have to call Metabank to remove the security block if you want to make any debit transactions. Agent said,” they are all setup this way.”:

I tried calling them to ask them to remove the security block and they blamed the company I was trying to pay. And the company blamed the bank. Meta bank said it can be processed online as credit, but no luck yet.

any idea on liquidating a Metabank $2,555 Mastercard gift card. I tried the invoice with PayPal. Bluebird, the funding source must be connected to a bank.Walmart slides as credit. I cannot add card to PayPal either. You could sell to Payal2cash. They want at least 10 percent. Western Union or Money gram said, no to money orders.

One Mastercard worth $2555? Never seen one. But to answer your question, pay property taxes.

Pay income taxes, or car insurance? Or whittle it down with groceries, utilities, etc.

Data point for Ohio: I had no trouble cashing out MB VGC for MO at Walmart and Kroger up through last week. This week, the $99 limit suddenly seems to be in effect. Not great timing, as I loaded up during the last no-fee Staples offer. My understanding is that the coding is by state (e.g., Ohio worked until now, WV hasn’t worked for years).

1) Any other data points from Ohio that confirm or contradict this?
2) Any data points from KY, TN, PN, VA, SC, or NC (or other states? would be useful to know if MO purchases for $200/card are still possible anywhere)?

Can confirm in GA this is also the case at Walmart. Worked a few weeks ago, but not today. It did not matter if I used the default pin, set my own pin first, or swiped backwards. It sounds like change payment won’t work either, although I didn’t have time to try it.

Is it blocked by the terminal at Kroger too? Or do you just have to get past the overzealous employees?

Thanks for the DP. Hard coded out at Kroger, though up to $99 works. No problem loading them on Serve VIP at WM, DG, FD fwiw.

JK The $99 swipe doesn’t work at my local kroger (here in Tn) anymore. Last time worked for me was end of may. Then a week ago when i tried to use a $200 grocery everywhere vgc that i bought from officedepot it didn’t work (at $99 swipe). Reset PIN didn’t help. When i called the metabank customer service, they told me it was rejected because “you tried to get money back or buy money order at kroger.” I didn’t realize they can see that much detail. Obviously either they had done something different or kroger has changed code at register. I don’t know if all everywhere cards are affected or just this grocery everywhere. If anyone else has data to share on this that would be great.

i received a gift card in the amount of $100.00 It is a visa card issued by MetaBank. When i called the number at the bank of the card, it asked me to enter the number and the security code. Everything I entered is correct. But the message came back that the card information is not recognized. the card is still valid with a date through 06/27. I kept being thrown in a loop, No option to talk to anyone. What is my recourse?

To get to a human, sometimes you have to select the option for lost/stolen card. Then explain it to them. They will double-check and give you guidance if you need a replacement card and if so, they should waive the replacement card fee normally charged for lost cards.

I tried the last/stolen link and the only thing that came up was a form that had to be notarized and mailed in –
any hints going further

DPs: loaded 2x $200 meta VGCs to BB Amex @ WM register using swipes of 75,75,50 each. Another day: loaded 5x $200 of same in separate $200 transactions @ MC. My WM has $1k daily limit.

I suspect I could have done the full $200 VGC swipes from the beginning. The MC cashier acted like it was no big deal. I’m in a rural area of a southern state. Also interesting to note: MCGCs failed on first swipe, and I didn’t want to experiment further and rock the boat since I still have a bunch of VGCs to unload first.

Interesting, my wife went to load BB at WM checkout and it didn’t go through and cashier gave her the run around that it had to have a chip to process debit. A few days later I did 3x 200′ VGC’s no problem.

So here’s an interesting DP. Over the last week, I’ve attempted to liquidate four Metabank Visas at WM (via Green Dot barcode). Three were $200 fixed-value cards from Staples–exp 10/29. One was a variable-load card from Meijer–exp 06/27. All four had BIN 4358 80.

The first fixed-value card went through without issue–had to do sub-$99 swipes with it, of course, so I did 75, 75 and, 50. Not a problem.

I then (same day/immediately after) tried the same thing with the variable-load card. It initially worked as well, allowing my first $75 swipe. The next swipe, however, gave me the familiar old “Debit Not Allowed” error. Tried that swipe again using the “Change Payment” button and got the same result.

Today, I went back and did the other two fixed-value cards in the same way I did the first and again, no issue.

Did Walmart charge you $3.74 when you swipe Visa Gift Card?
I looked at my receipt and it says GDN RELOAD and is charging the fee,$3.47.
The receipt from last month says GOBNK SWPFEE and no charge,$0.00.
Is there anyone who can explain this?

Sandy As I said in my post, I used the barcode in the Green Dot app, which is free. If I had swiped my card to reload, it would’ve cost me $3.95. It should be noted that I have the “Green Dot Unlimited” card and fees for their other cards like GoBank and Go2Bank may vary.

I am going to get Green Dot Unlimited Debit Card and then
get Green Dot app.

Sandy I’m actually not sure that the Unlimited account is available anymore for new customers, so good luck. In the app, you’d select Deposit, then Deposit Cash, then Create a Deposit Code, then select Walmart.

Location – Atlanta, GA, Date – July 2021
I tried to reload $200 MB VGC from Staples to Gobank at Cashier and Money Center at Walmart.
WM charged me $3.75 fee. This is my first time to be charged. Last month I loaded $200 MB VGC to GoBank at WM. No charge. Is there anyone who has same experience?

GoBank’s website FAQ says that there could be a fee of up to $4.95 at WM.

This is recent (actually the fee was $3.74). Looks like it is happening in most places now. Happened to me a couple days ago as well. I am currently waiting to see is this is permanent. If so my GoBank cards will be dumped.

In the lower right-hand corner of your keyboard, you will find a key with a dot on it. It is called a period.

FYI, was just able to use $200 Grocery Everywhere (BIN 4912 77) Visa cards acquired at officemax to reload at WM money center without even having to split it into sub-$99 swipes.

This has been my experience as well. I’ve used $200 Dining Everywhere and $200 Grocery Everywhere cards (purchased at OfficeMax) at Wal-Mart this past week with no problem whatsoever, loading my GoBank card in one swipe for the full $200. Maybe Everywhere cards are immune from the sub-$99 rule? That would be sweet, they’re already better because of the fee being $2 cheaper.

You cannot successfully receive cashback on them, even when their system asks you if you want some, so I don’t know what merchant could code it that way. Are you asking hypothetically, or if not, where did it happen to you?
