JetBlue To Increase Checked Baggage Fees To $35, $30 Price Remains For Online Booking

JetBlue was the first airline to increase baggage fees to $30 back in 2018 and other airlines quickly followed their lead. Effective immediately JetBlue will be increasing checked bag fees as follows:

  • $35 for first checked bag (previously $30)
  • $45 for second checked bag (previously $40)

If users pay in advance (prior to the online check in window opening) then the prices all drop by $5 (i.e stay the same). Now we wait to see what other airlines follow JetBlue’s lead here.

Does jetBlue AF card waive bag fees like the UA, AA, DL, AK cards? If so, there’s an angle if this is really an issue for folks.

Don’t forget SWA! They don’t charge to check up to two bags, and they give points on card anniversary.

The Plus card and the Business card (e.g. for folks trying to get under 5/24) waive one bag fee per ticket up to four tickets in an itinerary (hard not to check bags when travelling with kids). Each card is $99/yr but they give you 5k points at renewal. If you get Mosaic (spend $50k/yr) then they waive two bag fees per ticket.

I don’t think anyone likes airlines raising fees, but at the same time I really don’t care. I pay baggage fees once in a blue moon and have a hard time imagining someone really being significantly affected by this.

Fact is a checked bag is still about the cheapest way to move something across the country and if you need a checked bag you’ve got to recognize you’re outside the norm.

Unless you have a bunch of equipment for like work, snowboarding or whatever, then I cannot understand why anyone needs to check a bag on a domestic or short haul flight.

I’m a great packer but even I have more than a carry on for a 1-2 week vacation.

The good news is the extra $5 will help both TrueBlue badges and Ben Baldanza continue their extended vacations.
