The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Kroger.com is offering $10 off $150 on Visa & Mastercard gift cards with promo code OCT2022

Our Verdict

Seems to be limit 1. You’ll also get 2x fuel points per dollar. Won’t code as a grocery store as far as I know.

Read the scam reviews before buying this card. Mine was a dud. There is no phone support, just voicemail. They send you to a website “prepaidgiftbalance.com”, which is a NONEXISTENT website. A lot of people online are reporting they got scammed. Fortunately my bank refunded the charge (after much effort), otherwise I’d be out $100.

prepaidgiftbalance.com does exist, not sure what you are talking about?

That’s why they’re called “scam reviews.”

im done getting gift cards from kroger. last one i bought preapidgiftbalance.com issued by usbank was immediately blocked when i tried to use it called , they unblocked said wait an hour try again, tried didnt work called they said blocked agian, wait an hour again. this time i waited and called back before trying and couldnt get balance info in their automated system reached agent that said card blocked now for 24 hours. 24 hours didnt work, called and they said try again this time it finally worked. they kept asking me if this was a replacement card. something weird is going on with their cards, read a bunch of comments after the fact and this seems to be BAU

They’re only in increments of $25, $50, and $150.

The $50 has an activation fee of $4.95, whereas the $150 has an activation fee of $5.95, totaling $10.90.

After the $10, the total in fees would be $90, meaning you spent $150.90 to get $150 + 300 fuel points.

Assuming you have a 15 gallon tank and use those 300 points on a single fill-up, you’ll save $4.50 (15 gallons × $0.30) on that tank.

Net cost for the cards would be $146.40. If you use a 2% cash back card, that lowers it to $143.38.

If you spend $150 organically at Kroger, that will net you 150 fuel points; a 2% cash back card would also earn you $3. Using the same math for fuel point value as before (even though you can’t spend 50 fuel points) that $150 spend would save you $2.25 at the pump. Combining fuel points + cash back means the $150 organic spend costs you $144.75.

So buying these cards vs spending the money organically at Kroger puts you $1.37.

Of course, you can spend the cards other places than Kroger. And I thought through this too much for a buck-thirty-seven.

Your math is wrong. Kroger doesn’t sell $150 gift cards. They only sell gift cards in increments of $25, $50 and $100.

You’re right – the first two times I said $150 I meant to write $100.

Risk/Hassle adjusted return for this has to be more than $1.37. Basically no one should do this, right?

Buying the $150 in gift cards costs a net $.90. I get 2% cash back when I buy the gift cards…so I am ahead by $2.10 before I use the 300 fuel points.

The 300 fuel points is worth $10.50 (35 gallons). So total value is $12.60.

Is you can spend another $150 organically…then do so…it is not either or…it’s both.

meh. gas is about .80 a gallon more than other stations here, so still not worth filling up there even unless I have $1 gallon discount.

Kyle

Yikes! Kroger around me is typically within .10-.20/gallon of other stations. Usually it’s about the same.
