List of Merchant Gift Cards Which Can be Loaded to your Account

A reader asked we put together a list of merchant gift cards which can be loaded and locked into your account or app with the retailer. This is helpful when you buy a second-hand gift card and are worried about it being drained. It’s also convenient to load it immediately into your balance, especially if it’s a merchant you use regularly.

There are actually two methods how draining a gift card into your account can work. One is the account model, what Amazon uses, where you drain the gift card into your account balance. The other is the card model, what Starbucks uses, where you have one primary card and you can zero out any other gift cards and load their balance onto your primary card.

Note: most retailers allow you to load a gift card into your store app or online account. This is not what we are discussing. In those cases the card continues to work as before. For example, if you add a gift card to your Walmart app or online account, the card is conveniently saved for next shopping, BUT the physical card can still be used in-store and the card number can still be used online in a different account. Our list is specifically for those retailers who allow zeroing out and draining a gift card into your account or onto another card.

Let us know in the comments of any corrections, and of course please inform us of other retailer gift cards we can add to the list!

You can load the card to your Starbucks account and then transfer the balance to your own card to prevent the card you purchased from a 3P from being drained.

Peet’s Coffee as well. BTW Peet’s fans Costco online sells $100 for $80. They send 5, $20 cards. You can combine them all in the app to your account. gift cards can also be added to your account and drained.

What about Home Depot GC?

Useful post! Spotify, though it just extends your subscription vs. topping off a balance.

I think gift card can be loaded to your account too.

As stated in the post, Walmart just lets you link the card to your account, not drain the card. So it is still vulnerable to theft until fully spent.

I lost a Walmart gift card once, somewhere between using it at Walmart and the car. Luckily I had loaded it into my account so I went directly home and used it online. I imagine I might have been able to contact Walmart but not knowing how quickly someone would find it and use it, it seemed easier to just use it.

Zulily, I think…

Walmart model is also not bad, in my opinion.

Walmart’s model is bad. I loaded a GC from a 3rd party reseller and it was drained by the seller.

Wendy’s and Chik Fil A have the best model. Once you load the GC on to the app, the physical GC becomes void.

Very useful. Thanks for adding

Wendy’s gc can be added to your Wendy’s account

Amazon model is the best, why more companies don’t use it is beyond me.

Many companies would prefer that people lose gcs and ditch gcs with small balances. The goal isn’t always to make it easy to use them.

It’s decent, but could be better since they stopped letting you check the balance of gift codes before loading them to your account.

Wayfair seems to work like Amazon to me

BR does not have merge balance automatically, you must email customer service to combine balances.

I was just going to say that Baskin Robins doesn’t work…but I had no idea about emailing customer service. Thanks for the heads up. T-mobile Tuesday leaves me with tons of $2 cards–we have 5 lines!

Disney can have up to $1k per card. If you have more then you’ll have to start a new card.

The cards issued by the chase Disney for your rewards have to be used to buy a Disney gift card before they can be merged with other Disney cards.

Snapfish works like the account model as well

Wish Lowe’s had one of these options. I bought discounted Lowe’s gift card’s from one of the ebay sales, but there’s no way to add them to your Lowe’s account, except to carry the physical cards in your wallet all the time.

I add lowes gift cards to samsung pay

will it combine those Lowes GC into just one total amount, after u load them to Samsung pay

I think that’s just for convenience, the card’s value remains tied to the original card number and thus vulnerable to theft, until fully spent.

Lowes, are your listening? There are at least 2 of us that would like this!
