MPX Travel and Dining Purchases Now Coding Correctly on Chase Sapphire Reserve and other cards [YMMV]

It appears that the MPX app generally does code properly as travel or dining on the Chase Sapphire Reserve card (and presumably other cards) when buying travel or dining gift cards. For example, if you buy an Airbnb gift card it should code as travel and earn 3x. Should also work to trigger the travel credit. And many/most dining establishment gift cards should code at 3x as well. Similarly, buying Staples gift cards on the INK+ card should code at 5x.

We’ve posted back and forth about this in the past, so it’s not entirely reliable, both because some gift cards may not be code correctly, and because the MPX system seems to revert to the incorrect coding from time to time, but last we’re hearing it is working now.

I try keeping the Payments Workshop updated on MPX, but it’s difficult due to the inconsistencies.

I tried to purchase a Macy’s gift card with my Freedom card last month to see if it would code as a department store to get 5x for the Q4 bonus category, but it did not.

Hey so to recap when you say “correctly” you mean the category of the gift card you are purchasing (ebay gift card will code as online retail for example) or you mean united/travel for all expenses meaning you ll get 3x on all purchases for chase ink preferred/saphire reserve ?

It took only 3 days following purchase for credit to show, so it may likely not qualify anymore. Google Play also worked in Nov.

Also curious about this. Used for 2x $50 ebay GCs last year, Q2 – no issue. Hoping to use up the $100 credit with this again in 2019…

Confirming that Ebay $25 GC via MPX posted and received credit in January 2019. Great news!

Anyone tried with the Amex Platinum (5x on travel) or is that still a no-go?

I don’t think this restores the 5x on Amex Platinum… because when it did that it was coding as a purchase with United. Amex Platinum isn’t 5x on general travel… only on US airfare and Amex travel dollars.

Amex Platinum isn’t restricted to US airfare for 5x. It is airfare purchased directly from airlines.

So, hopefully this should work for the Prestige on restaurants.
