Navy Federal More Rewards American Express Card – 30,000 Point Bonus

Update 3/4/19: Bonus has increased to 30,000 points

Update 10/01/18: Bonus is back to 25,000 points.

Update 03/01/18: Navy Federal Credit Union has added a sign up bonus to the ‘Navy Federal More Rewards American Express Card‘. Previously this card has had no public sign up bonus, but we have seen targeted bonuses of up to 30,000 points. According to NFCU they offered a public bonus of 25,000 points at the same time they offered the targeted 30,000 point bonus so it might be wise for a better bonus to come along.

Card Basics

  • Sign up bonus of 30,000 points after $3,000 in spend within the first 90 days of account opening
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 3x points per $1 spent at supermarkets and gas stations
    • 2x points per $1 spent at restaurants
    • 1x point per $1 spent on all other purchases
  • No annual fees
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • No balance transfer fees
  • Points are same as those on other NFCU cards (e.g GO REWARDS & Flagship)
  • Points are worth 1¢ towards travel and there is a minimum redemption of 5,000 points (1,000 for digital downloads and 3,000 for gift cards)

Our Verdict

It’s nice to see them finally adding a sign up bonus on this card, I thought they should have launched it with one.  Overall card is not terribly exciting, 3x at supermarkets might be useful for some people but there are better options out there. The same is true for gas station purchases. Using the card at restaurants or all other purchases doesn’t make any sense at all as there are cards that earn 2%+ cash back on all purchases (plus cards that earn at a higher rate on restaurant purchases specifically).

Will, the minimum redemption is 1000 points for Digital Downloads and 3000 for Merchandise and Gift Cards. This link has a list: https://www.navyfederal.org/pdf/creditcards/NFCU_821AMEX.pdf

Even without the sign-up bonus this card is good for MS unless it has a cap on groceries and gas. Many grocery stores and gas stations carry variable-load Visa/Master GCs with a $5.95/4.95 fee respectively. So 500 + 5.95 = $505.95 x .03 = $15.17 – 5.95 = $9.23 – .70 = $8.53MM per card. Not to mention grocery stores, like Safeway, Giant have discount several times a year.

Yep only benefit to this card is unlimited MS for heavy hitters. I’m still trying to figure out heavy MS without MO though…

My quick assessment of the new NFCU More Rewards:
— I wish it were Visa instead of Amex. It will be mostly useless overseas.
— I wish it had a signup bonus. It doesn’t, even though NFCU has offered signup bonuses on other cards recently.
— I am disappointed to see that the rewards program is being run by TSYS, the same vendor who runs the Flagship Rewards and Go Rewards programs. I had hoped that part of the NFCU-Amex deal would be to use Amex’s LoyaltyEdge subsidiary to design a new and innovative rewards program for NFCU. That didn’t happen.
— The 3% for both groceries and gas is a wee bit better than the Amex BCE which gives 3% for groceries and 2% for gas.
— The new card has a high minimum redemption, $50. At my rate of spending, $3000 groceries and $300 gas per year, i would only be able to redeem once every 6 or 7 months. High minimum redemptions are what soured me on both Go Rewards ($50) and Amex BCE ($25) last year. I prefer the NFCU cashRewards redemption policy of any amount any time.
— Rewards are based on “points” which can be devalued. The points can’t be combined across other NFCU cards.
— The overall rewards redemption scheme (travel, merchandise, gift cards, pay with points, cash back) is every bit as complicated as Go Rewards, despite the bold press release in May 2017 that this card would have a simple, easy to understand rewards program. In fact, More Rewards looks like almost a carbon copy of Go Rewards with groceries substituted for dining as the lead bonus category.

My verdict: I’m going to pass on the More Rewards card. I’ll continue to use PenFed Power Cash Rewards for groceries and gas. Although I’ll earn 2% on Power Cash vice 3% on More Rewards, the dollar difference will only be $33 a year, too low an amount to endure the hassle of managing More Rewards.

Is there any way for non-military to join? I know there was a few months ago but the method was closed..

Since Navy Federal is mainly for current and former military members, I tell my fellow soldiers to just pass on this card since I got it and used it at the Commissary (the big store where you buy food on base), but the Commissary does not qualify as a Supermarket so I did not get 3 points there! Total SCAM since this targets mostly military folks!

Commissary does count as a Supermarket with my American Express Blue. It has for years. Don’t know what the problem is with your card.

Does anyone know how soon the 25,000 bonus points are posted? Are the points posted as soon as the transactions post or after the first statement generates? Thank you!

i checked with them since i made the requirement within first month. they said 90 after the qualifying period ends of which you need to make the minimum purchase so will be about 6 months. Not sure why they make you wait SOOO long

Thanks for checking. I went ahead and paid the $250 balance before it reports to the credit bureaus. Would have been great if they made the points available immediately.

I ended up getting the bonus at the 60 day mark 2 statements, better than what their rep stated but still a little slow compared to others

Interesting offer but it’s sad that they don’t allow people who are not affiliated to the military to join their credit union.

I knew someone who joined, and they werent…..Not sure of their verification process

PG

I hear they’ll sometime accept people, but then verify later, sometimes months later, and close all accounts if the person didn’t meet membership requirements. And you might wind up w/ two HP’s- 1 for membership and 1 for card, although I’ve heard conflicting reports on that one. Membership is definitely a HP, but they might combine if done same day. Don’t think it’s worth the risk, personally.

My sister is non-military but she worked for NFCU as an intern in the past and she got the membership at that time. Her checking account is still active. I don’t know if she can sponsor other people for membership though.

This card just popped up on 1Oct2018 with a 25k points for 3k spend in 90 days offer.

I think these points are worth 1cpp, with a minimum redemption of $25.00 as statement credit or a deposit to your NFCU savings. Not sure if they’re worth more for other redemption options.
