No, Bank of America Doesn’t Charge A $20 Fee To Expedite Under Review Applications

Yesterday reddit user AmeriKop45 posted that they applied for two credit cards, one was instantly approved and the other was under review. They called in to try and expedite that application under review and were told that their is now a $20 fee to do so (otherwise they could just wait the standard 7-10 period). This seemed like a strange fee to charge, so I contacted the Bank of America media department. They stated that the above information was inaccurate and that they have no such policy.

I’m not sure why or how this miscommunication came about, but it’s good to know that such a fee isn’t in place. Lots of readers alerted me to this, so I wanted to do a dedicated post to let them know it’s not the case.

Called a couple of times and no one will look at my pending card without trying to charge a $20 fee…

You really should redact this, I had the same experience and BofA would not let me reconsider without paying $20 extra. Media services might be fast to respond but apparently inaccurate.

So far BOA is very nice to me. I have 11 BOA cards with 240k CL for the past 18 months. All cards were either instant approved or approved less than 12 hours without calling recon.

11 CCs.
2 BoA travel for 2.625% regular MS
3 Cash CC for 3.5% grocery store
4 Alaska
1 AAA Member Rewards for 3.75% travel expense
1 Business card for business need.

I am a Preferred rewards member. I opened my first BOA checking account June 2015 and become PR member at Sep 2015.

BOA is pretty good at getting low interest car loans at least. However, I can never get a new card approved.

Hey DoC – When I was first told about this fee I thought it was strange as well. So I called again, and I was once again told that there would be a $20 fee. This fee is to “expedite the card delivery.” When I said I did not cared about expediting the card, they told me if I wanted the decision today, I would have to have the card expedited and would have to pay the $20 fee.

If it makes any difference, the card I was approved for was the BoFA AS personal card. The card that I was trying to get a decision for was the Business version of this card.

Again – I was told that this fee was just put in place about a month ago.

My reply on Reddit:

Once again, I did not have the option to just get the decision and not have the card expedited. I explicitly stated that I don’t want the card to be expedited, just want the decision. I was told if I want the decision before the 7-10 day period, I would have the pay the fee and get both the decision and card expedited.

What happens if you are not approved for the card? How do you pay the $20 fee if you have no other accounts with them?

This is just a case of an inept CSR or CSRs that were poorly trained or misunderstood their own policies.

You know what I’m the most impressed with here? That you were actually able to contact someone from bank of America, who was knowledgeable in this area. I’ve had multitude of issues with boa that are still pending from CFPB even after 2 months.

I wouldn’t recommend boa to anyone.
