No More eBay Bucks on Gift Card Purchases Starting October

Starting October 1, 2016, we won’t earn eBay Bucks on any gift card purchases, both physical and digital.

The change can be found in your eBay account under the eBay Bucks tab. The official terms have not yet been updated.

One other change mentioned is that, starting in 2017, eBay Bucks won’t be able to be redeemed to buy eBay gift cards. They should still work to buy third party gift cards or any other item on eBay.

This will take away the profitability of most eBay gift card flips. RIP.

Well, we knew it was coming. At least they notified us ahead of time. I’m sure it had nothing to do with them potentially getting into hot water. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with sellers like SVM and what kind of discounts they’re providing on these cards going forward. As you wrote, RIP gift card deals.

eBay is not going to put themselves at an obvious disadvantage over other sellers, so if eBay is restricting bonuses on their own cards, they will do the same for everyone else’s. There is no incentive to pay a bonus on a gift card when most other retailers disallow similar incentives on gift cards. eBay was throwing their marketing money away.

After this summer’s retailer fraud prevention conferences you are going to see a lot of changes in retail sales of gift cards starting in 2017. Most important recommendation: Cash only. No credit cards or other payment forms. Gift card fraud was way up this year, both in sales with stolen credit cards and gift card tampering. The takeaway: move gift cards behind the counter and use shelf slips on display consumers can redeem for the cards at customer service to prevent tampering and stop accepting anything but cold hard cash for gift cards to stop fraud. Drug stores are the first to head in this direction, followed by grocery stores. Some retailers will exempt their own gift cards, especially grocery stores.

Ebay = worthless now!!!

At least ebay learned to give notice this time!

10/1 will be the day I start to forget about Ebay and its stupid customer service then.

Ebay has to learn giving notice unless it wants to get more lawsuits chasing it.

I don’t know about you but come Thanksgiving if I’m asked to say what I’m thankful for, I’m going to stand up, wear a shit-eating-grin, and emphatically yell out “I’m thankful for no longer needing to participate in the endless PayPal verification loops.”

I’m pretty sure this is ebay’s: we’ve lost enough money to the people who are ONLY buying gift cards during 4x/5x ebay bux multipliers… using gift cards that they’ve double, triple, quadruple, quintuple dipped portal (or other) discounts on, etc. etc. It was good while it lasted.

More like: there’s SO MUCH demand – why are we giving out these discounts? Let’s raise prices and clean up!

Can’t say I blame eBay. It was a great ride while it lasted.

SO prices on third party gift cards will return to normal post Oct 1st
On another note can someone please confirm if ebay bucks certificate is a big amount

SteveX

multiple transactions.

max
max

thanks for confirmation ..so basically if i use it to pay for 100$ item
then the rest 100$ will remain on the same certificate .. similar to ebay gift card correct ?

Take note that you only have 1 month to spend it all, that was the main reason for people buying an eBay gift card, to avoid expiration.

Question: I never really got into the whole gift card game on eBay. Were most people buying them discounted to use, to resell for profit/MS, or to just help meet minimum spend requirements? Or other?

Mark O
Mark O

All of the above. I used it mostly for min spend though and personal use. I will still by some for personal use like CVS gift cards…hopefully they discount them more because of this. Reselling is all but dead at this point though except for the rare occasion.

Primarily personal use and to get 5% off on gold bullion, as I am amassing a collection as part of diversification.
