Bank Account Bonuses

[Expired][NYC only] Astoria Bank $250/$300 Checking Account Promotion

Deal has ended, view more great bonuses here.

[Reposting since this offer has a new signup link and it was extended through September 30, 2016. Note that the bank seems to be difficult to deal with, and often requests in-person verifications.]

Offer at a glance

  • Maximum bonus amount: $300
  • Availability: New York City only (actually it looks like you don’t actually need to live in New York to qualify). They might require you to come into a branch to verify your identity, so be aware of this.
  • Direct deposit required: Optional, direct deposit of $250 or more per month for three months
  • Additional requirements: Optional, three online bill payments of $25 or more for three months
  • Hard/soft pull: Soft, chex systems
  • Credit card funding: None
  • Monthly fees: Yes, unknown amount and waivable
  • Early account termination fee: Unknown
  • Expiration date: September 30, 2016

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Receive a sign up bonus of $250 when you open a Simple+ or Select checking account with Astoria bank and complete the following requirements:
    • Maintain the required balances to keep the accounts fee free (Simple+ requires $2,500+ in the account or $10,000+ across all Astoria accounts and Select requires $25,00+ across all Astoria accounts)
    • Complete one of the following during three consecutive months:
      • Receive direct deposits of $250 or more
      • Make three online bill payments of $25 or more each
  • In addition to this it’s possible to get another $50 for activating direct deposit. According to these comments this may no longer be possible.

The Fine Print

  • Limit of one bonus per customer
  • Bill pays or direct deposits must all be completed within 4 months of account opening
  • Bonus will be posted within 30 business days of the requirements being met
  • A direct deposit is considered a recurring, pre-authorized deposit credited to the customer’s checking account via the Automated Clearing House (ACH). One-time ACH credits such as tax refunds, payments/transfers from other bank accounts, etc. do not qualify
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

The simple+ account comes with a monthly fee of $10, this is waived if you keep an average monthly balance of $2,500 which is required for the bonus anyway.

The Select has a monthly fee of $15 which is waived if you have at least $25,000 across all your Astoria accounts.

There is no mention of any early account termination fee on their fee schedule page. If your account is inactive for 90 days or more, you’ll be charged a $10 inactivity fee.

Our Verdict

This is a pretty good bonus and was offered last year as well, if I lived in NY then I would definitely complete this deal. Here is what I’d do:

  • Open a new Simple+ account
  • Add a total of $2,725 in funds to meet the minimum balance requirements, this would also keep the account fee free and give me enough money to do the three bill pays per month for three months (you can only fund $2,500 at account set up, so you’ll need to fund again afterwards, thanks to Nick for letting me know this)
  • Complete three bill pays per month for three consecutive months, making sure they are all at least $25 each (you could just make small payments on your credit card or other bill) (+$250)
  • Wait six months to avoid any possible early account termination fee
  • Withdraw all funds including bonus to regular checking account
  • Close account

If you have any experience with this bonus, then please share it in the comments. We’ve add this to our Best Bank Bonus page for regional areas. Also, check out this Bank Bonus Resource page for lots of useful info about opening bank accounts.

Do we have to be an NY resident to take advantage of this offer? I drive to NYC all the time and I am resident of NJ.

The monthly fee is $10.

The schedule of fees is at

Simple+ is $10
Select is $15

there doesn’t seem to be an early closing fee but there is an inactivity fee of $10/month after 89 days.

The most you can fund the account with is $2,500

**at account setup

Was planning to set this up today actually. They’re a smallish bank so I think its hard to get an account open without being an NY resident. In fact you’ll have difficulty being anything but a downstate resident.

Also from it looks like this $250 offer is stackable with the normal $50 direct-deposit offer, so this is really a $300 bonus.

I did this bonus when it was offered last year. Couple things to note:

-For some reason, I had to go into a branch to validate my identity in person. Thankfully, there was one right near me. But worth considering if you aren’t in NYC.
-The bill pay is very easy to set up.
-Transactions take a long time to post (like 5 days–longer than the big banks).
-There’s an account inactivity fee of $10/mo, so keep on doing something with it even after the bonus posts. I haven’t closed mine yet but have been doing a $25 bill pay once a month and that’s avoided any fees.
-The bonus triggered and was deposited instantly after three months.

Overall, it was sort of a pain, but still worth doing.

Is this New York City only or New York State only? It seems that this bank only has branches around NYC –

Is it New York City or New York state? I noticed that this bank only has branches around NYC.

Also, where do you see the requirement that NY is only? I did not find the information from the details…Thanks!

I am living at NY, and I just applied. That’s what I got “Thank you for your interest in opening a new account.
Unfortunately, we cannot process your application at this time. We will contact you by mail within 2-3 business days with additional information.” Any one knows what happened? Thank you!

You do not need to be a resident of New York for this promotion. I did it previously didn’t get the bonus as the transactions needed to post by A certain date and didn’t meet the necessary requirements. Don’t think it needs to be opened for a specific amount of time before closing.

Can you advise how you made this happen?

I applied using a temporary NYC address (a friend’s address) and was given the “this produce is not available in your area.”

Any help is appreciated.

I did the deal last year and closed the account after I got the bonus. How long before i Do the deal again?

For example for Chase, you have to wait 90 or 180 days before you get the bonus again.

I did this offer last year and it was pretty painless. I live in NY state, nowhere near NYC but opned the account online and never had to go to a branch.

Applied for wife and I (separately) yesterday. I saw the ACH trial deposits pending today so I went to “Finalize your account” by using the Verification Code given. Both of ours received a message “An error has occurred. If the problem persists, please contact us using the contact information in the left panel.” as we clicked Continue.

Called in, first rep said there was an error with the application and to re-submit. Second said the application was denied. If the latter is the case, then they must not like our Chex inquiries. We’ve had 7 and 6 checking accounts opened in the last few (3 to 4) months, not sure how many actually made it on the Chex report. Nothing before that time frame.

Or, it is too soon to verify the deposits? Plan on waiting another day and trying again.

Anyone with similar experience?

Also, if I am denied the Astoria account, the Chex inquiry (given that they did pull one) will still remain on my Chex report, like how a credit inquiry works, is that right?

I just had the same thing, what did the letter say?

Same here. Were you able to open the account?

Just created an account today. The offer expiration says today’s date, June 30, but I won’t be able to verify for a couple more days because of the test deposits. I hope I am still able to get the bonus.

They told me today that it has been extended to end of year. I applied (again) today too
