Paypal Business Debit Card Now Reserved only for Paypal Business Accounts

A reader received an email from Paypal regarding their Paypal Business Debit card (PPBDC) on a personal Paypal account advising that personal Paypal accounts can no longer have the PPBDC. Personal Paypal accounts will only be able to get the Paypal Cash Mastercard which does not earn 1% back on purchases.

I assume others got or will get similar emails. The email also mentions an offer of $5 cashback on each your first three $50+ purchase on the new Paypal Cash Mastercard.

It’s always been possible to get a PPBDC on personal Paypal accounts if you’ve received $500+ in the account within the past 30 days. Seems Paypal is now stopping that method, reserving PPBDCs for business Paypal accounts only.

It’s fairly simply to open a Paypal business account as a sole proprietor to avail yourself of the PPBDC. Lots of simple eBay businesses have a Paypal business account.

The PPDDC is interesting for the 1% cashback on debit signature transactions. There may be some online debit purchases which earn 1% back at little cost, e.g. paying taxes with a debit card has a much smaller fee than credit and it might (?) work to earn 1% back on PPBDC.

should i:
a)
convert existing personal account to business? will they allow me to keep PPBDC?
does it make sense to open new personal account?
b)
open new business account and transfer/open new PPBDC? keep my personal one

I guess what I am asking would having business account be any less disadvantageous than personal?

Do $50 Amazon gift card purchases trigger the $5 bonus deal?

How does this work with old “Premier” accounts? It was a tier between personal and business that I’m still grandfathered into.

I also have an old “Premier” account and I’m wondering about this as well. So far no email from Paypal.

Very stupid question but sub 5/24 = paranoid: The PP BIZ Debit card doesn’t count as a credit card right?

A few things aren’t clear to me:
1. For existing PP Biz debit card holders, will this be a switchover or a new application? With a switchover, that would generally mean no hard credit pull, and therefore no hit to your credit score. From the language in the PayPal email, I am thinking that it’s just a switchover – is that correct?
2. I can’t tell from DoC’s post if this new card (PayPal Cash Mastercard) will be a debit card or a credit card. I am guessing it is a debit card – is that correct? But even if it were a credit card, with a switchover rather than a new application, I am assuming that it wouldn’t count against your 5/24 status.

Actually I also realized that starting from earlier this month, PPBDC can no longer be able to add to Blue Bird or Serve account. If you attempt to add PPBDC to BB/Serve, it has a message in red says you cannot link a credit card. However, existing linked PPBDC can still use to fund BB/Serve and coded as pinless purchase that earns 1% back.

Thanks for the DP. I did remove the PPBDC from BB and Serve last month to unload some Mastercard GCs and then added them back again with no issues. Now I will not remove the PPBDC for such. Bettter safe than sorry.

I suspect this is due to InComm having acquired the rights to become Amex’s prepaid cards distributor.
