Plink Closes Down Effective Immediately

For those not familiar with Plink, basically it was an app based loyalty program that allowed you to earn Plink Points when you shopped at selected partner merchants. They launched with a bang of partners but relatively soon after a number of the big partners cancel their partnerships and Plink was unable to replace them.

It also looks like the company failed to get additional funding from investors. This has lead them to shut down their website and app, effectively immediately, you can read more on their homepage. To make matters worse, those with Plink Points will not be able to redeem them. This has angered many as there are lots of people with $5-$50+ in points that they’ve been unable to redeem for due to the Plink store often being sold out of gift cards.

If you’d like to read more about the history of Plink, I’d recommend going over to Travel With Grant‘s blog to read his post on the matter. I have not had much use for Plink since they removed Office Depot and Staples as a partner and I was able to cash out pretty much all of my existing points awhile ago. This should serve as a reminder that you’re much better off redeeming your points as soon as possible to avoid devaluations and program closures.

It’ll be interesting to see how similar programs such as ShopKick will fare in the future. It hasn’t been a good week for shut downs, with Amazon Payments announcing it will not allow person to person payments starting October 13th, 2014.

Thanks for the link to Will. I’m glad I only have 470 orphaned Plink Points in my account. It will be interesting to see if people will get anything from Plink if they had 500+ Plink Points. I wouldn’t hold my breath.

I definitely agree. It would be great if management could share what happened with their partnership with Office Depot and Staples. They seemed to pay out such a high amount of Plink Points, that maybe it was unsustainable.
