>I used to love them, but they are quickly becoming just as bad as the taxi services they are replacing.

Wow, this is a surprising comment. I don’t like the rising costs, nor do I like the shadowy intentions of kill off the competition then raise prices, nor do I like the gig economy where we all fight for scraps and some external corporation takes a fat chunk for essentially no labour.

However, Uber drivers have excellent service, consistently, whereas taxis were always bad. Not sure what you mean by that comment. Just in cost?

I’ve had plenty of nice taxi drivers in the past.

Uber at its infancy felt like white glove service each time. It certainly has deteriorated. The driver no longer always help with luggage, some have pissy attitude, and the car isn’t always clean. Sure, the average Uber today is still nicer than the average taxi, but they are converging quickly. Not that we should expect any different, when considering basic economic theory. The ride share industry has a far lower bar for entry and lower compensation, so how is it possible that it consistently maintain a higher standard than the taxis?

Taxis were an artificial monopoly in a lot of places, and there was little recourse for poor driving/customer service. The local governments only sold so many taxi medallions. Now anybody can drive, and if you’re rated poorly you’ll get fired from Uber.

“I have a love/hate relationship with Uber.”

Lyft isn’t perfect either, but I think it is better than Uber overall, for both drivers and customers.

Not sure how it’s better for the customer when the rates are usually double in my area.

I am in Philly. Lyft is usually a bit pricier here. I went to Los Angeles last week, and used Uber multiple times, because Lyft was more expensive as well.

Probably just sample size bias but I’ve had a much harder time with actually getting lyfts to show up — they go to wrong spot, don’t even attempt to get me, etc, while uber the drivers tend to be ruder. Lyft customer service has been solid though
