Recap: Zelle Warning, Alliant Changes, GCM Changes & More

  • Multiple readers report that Giftcardmart is no longer earning 5x with the Chase INK card since a couple of weeks ago. Used to code as Utilities, now codes as Miscellaneous. This has happened before and they were able to change it back, hopefully they’ll have luck this time too.

If not PayPal, what else do you use to send strangers money with protection?

I feel if PayPal let’s you down, you still can dispute the charge with your credit card company, assuming you paid with a credit card through PayPal.

PayPal is better than nothing. Although there is one exception for Venmo use and that would be when purchasing something with cash. It is a cash equivalent so if you were purchasing a $500 phone or laptop on CL anyway then Venmo would be a fair substitute.

I’m glad to see Alliant taking a firm stance on abuses of their credit card rewards system. The heavy hitters have the potential to ruin it for the rest of us, and they need to be stopped.

Was thinking of applying for this card but read this in the disclosure:

“Cash back is not eligible on … purchases of and any fees paid towards gift cards, pre-paid cards, re-loadable cards ….”

I buy gift cards on sale all the time because they can be a good value, but no cash back now at all for gift cards if using this card.

My guess is, the only reason that language is in their terms is because of the people who milk the rewards for all they can during the first year @ 3% and then stop using the card.

I got a letter from Alliant accusing me of business use on a personal credit card. Didn’t think to save the letter though. Was doing about 30k a month. Said if I kept it up they would close my account. Debated keeping the card since I’m close to the one year mark and about to hit the annual fee and drop the CB rate to 2.5. I’ll make sure to put at least $12k a year on it to make it worth my while and when I get bored of it I’ll crank it up again until they close it.

So, watch out for an Alliant shut down.
