[Confirmed] Barclays To Improve Aviator Benefits

Update 2/20/19: Reddit user utb040713 was told it’s not currently possible to downgrade to the no AF version, but that a new no AF version would be launched in mid-March. If that’s correct then that is likely when we see other changes. Obviously customer service reps are often wrong, but still interesting given the other information we know.

Update 10/27/18: This has now been confirmed. When sending out letters regarding the loss of the EQD earning opportunity being removed (more on this tomorrow) they specifically reference enhancements coming in 2019. See picture below. hat tip to reader Jun Y

Reader Kasey C recently called Barclays to see if they would give them a retention offer (something everybody should be doing). They were able to get the annual fee waived and a statement credit of $100 if $1,000 was spent per month for the next three months. What’s really interesting is that the representative stated that Barclays is currently reviewing the benefits of the card and are expecting to improve the benefits come next spring. They weren’t able to provide specifics, but it would focus on making the card more rewarding for every day spend.

I have no idea how likely this rumor is to be true, it comes from a customer service representative and they often don’t have the best intel. Although retention reps are usually higher up that offer customer facing reps and are given more information/ability to resolve issues with points/offers than other reps. Currently the Aviator earns at the following rates:

  • 2x miles on American Airlines purchases
  • 1x miles on all other purchases

I can see them changing that to:

  • 3x miles on American Airlines purchases
  • 1.5x miles on all other purchases

Personally I still wouldn’t use the card for every day spend, but I suspect it would be useful for some cardholders.

This would be fantastic for us expats, though! But as of now I’m content with the Arrival Premier for my non-bonus spend abroad.

My retention offer two weeks ago was if I spent $1000 total within the 3 months (not each month), I would get 5000 bonus AA miles. My cardmember year isn’t up until February.

The Rep also could have been making it up to provide a reason not to cancel the card.

This for the business card? (That’s what the image is of)

Wouldn’t be surprised if they match the Citibank Aa credit card spend categories since the Citibank cards are now superior for those not interested in EQDs. So the aviator white card would be similar to Mileup Advantage card and earn 1 mile per dollar instead of 1 mile per 2 dollars plus double miles on Groceries. The Aviator red would get 2x miles on gas and restaurants. Not sure what would happen to Aviator Silver since Citi doesn’t offer a competitor to this card.

Other potential options are few waiver on baggage for all flights instead of just those in the US which would make it competitive with Delta and United; the Eqms could also earn Rdms similar to the Delta card instead of just The 5000 Eqms.

If they changed the Aviator Red to 3X miles on AA purchases on AA purchases, wouldn’t they then have to increase the Aviator Silver earning rate? It already gets 3X AAdvantage miles on AA purchases….

The should improve their approval rates, lol.

The Aviator Red is a World Elite Mastercard so it would be great if they offered some sort of lounge access through the LoungeKey program. Even if it was a couple of passes per calendar year. Perfect for those of us who don’t travel that much and could pop into a lounge once or twice.

The AA Barclay cards Personal/Business, how frequently are they churnable?

Also why would one want to keep them and not churn them for more miles (welcome bonuses)?

What number are people calling for Barclays retention?
I was 0/2 on LH and A+ recently

When my first year is up I’m going to call to cancel and if I get a human I’ll say applying for Citi AA better earning rates.

Should I apply for Barclay AA or Citi AA first? I want to get both of them, but I remember seeing a post that justified applying for Citi first because you can get the Barlcay bonus in a shorter period after. Which one I should get first?

Do you want to pay $95 AF first and a soda to get 50k miles or spend 2k within 3 months?

Me

Haha. Good way to put it. I guess both ways dont bother me. What people usually do? And also dont see 50k for 2k spent, I see 40k for 2k spent

I’d get them both at the same time. Also, apply for the Citi one, but just secure message them to match to the 75K offer.

75,000 is for the Citi AAdvantage Executive card. They aren’t going to match that. Most of the the data points cited are from more than a year ago.

I got them to match me from the 60k a few weeks ago

Because the Aviator doesn’t really have a spending requirement other than $95+ a soda or some mcdonalds fries you can get both at same time. From application date to getting my Aviator bonus in my AA account took 3 weeks.

I am assuming closing both at 1 year mark wont be an issue?

Don’t think so. Two cards at different card companies. When I close my Aviator I’ll just say I’m getting Citi AA card it has better earning rates.

I signed up for the Barclay red card a few months ago for the 50k mile bonus. At the same time I signed up for CSR. After meeting my minimum spend, i see zero reason to keep this card. I thought the Pin and Chip feature would be helpful in Europe but I only used it once since nearly everywhere accepted Android Pay. Very unimpressed with the card so at the end of the year I’ll just be happy for the points and cancel.

Barclay Chip + PIN World Elite Mastercards have the complete & proper implementation of Chip + Pin for un-manned kiosk purchases in Europe. For tickets at train station, they are the best choice. In Europe, normal chip + signature for handheld scanners for all Visa & MC seem to work fine.

My understanding was that only the Barclaycard Arrival Plus is a true chip & pin card.
