[Expired] Safeway 10x Fuel Points On Most/All Third-Party Gift Cards (11/29 – 12/3) [Vons, Randall’s, Albertsons, Tom Thumb, Acme, Jewel, Shaw’s]

Deal has expired, view more Safeway deals by clicking here.

Online coupon is saying unlimited use…

The Offer

  • Safeway is offering a JustForU coupon to get 10x on just about all third-party gift cards purchased from November 29 – December 3.

Presumably the same deal is at all the stores in the Safeway chain: Vons, Randall’s, Albertsons, Tom Thumb, Acme, Jewel, Shaw’s.

The Fine Print

  • Excludes open loop cards (Visa/MC), Albertsons company’s own cards, fuel company, telecom, and general purpose reloadable debit cards.
  • One offer per transactions.
  • Gift card purchases must be made in a single transaction.

Our Verdict

10x on just about all third-party gift cards is pretty incredible. From what I can tell, this offer should work on Amazon gift cards too. Make sure to use a card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases.

Far as I can tell, this should stack with the $25 shopping voucher deal when you buy $150 in gift cards from brands like Lowe’s, Chipotle, Hotels.com, Gap, and more.

You can also get 15% off iTunes through 11/30, and I suppose that’ll stack with this 10x points offer. Just keep in mind the $500 purchase limitation on Best Buy, iTunes, Gamestop, and Google gift cards.

What is the 10x worth? We don’t have connected gas stations here in Chicago (Jewel) and can only get 20c off at Shell gas stations. I know 7 rewards can be $10 off groceries but not sure what 10x equates to in rewards.

Nick
Nick

10x = $1.00 off 25 gallons per $100.00 gift card purchased

lilurbanachiever
lilurbanachiever

If you shop there, you can parlay this into ~$12-14 off groceries per a 100 gift card.

Celia
Celia

100 points equals 1 reward so $100 gift card would equate 1000 points or 10 rewards. Strictly for a grocery discount, it would be $14 off (7 rewards for $10 off, 3 rewards for $4 off).

Calvin
Calvin

Celia
Someone mentioned a 3 rewards per month limit when redeeming for groceries, is that correct?

Celia
Celia

You’re limited to each tier each month at Jewel. So I can only redeem one $10 grocery reward for 7 rewards, one $7 for 5 rewards, etc. it seems to change a little each month. I have redeemed 4 grocery rewards so far this month. rewards expire the end of the following month they’re earned so I will be purchasing on 12/1.

Calvin

Celia
Is it possible to redeem more than one reward in one transaction?
Let’s say I buy $20 worth of groceries, could I use a $10 reward and a $7 reward, and only pay $3?

Celia
Celia

Yes, I have done that with smaller amounts.

Sorry, still trying to understand how this program works. Maybe DoC can add this information to their review of the program.

Is the system smart enough to apply a bakery reward first before applying a generic grocery reward? So when buying $3 worth of bakery items and $9 worth of other grocery items, would the bill be zero, when redeeming a $2 bakery and $10 grocery reward (all in one transaction)?

Also, when clipping a meat coupon (not a reward), can that meat purchase be offset by using a meat (or grocery) reward?

Celia
Celia

Honestly, I don’t know. I would suggest reading the FAQs for the J4U program and see how it applies to you.

Alan H
Alan H

“Also, when clipping a meat coupon (not a reward), can that meat purchase be offset by using a meat (or grocery) reward?”

Yes, you can use a coupon and a reward on the same item. If you have a $7 off meat reward and the coupon takes the price below $7, then the reward won’t activate – but you will still be able to use it the next time you make a meat purchase of over $7. If the coupon doesn’t take the price below $7, then the reward will be applied.

Alan H
Alan H

No rewards per month limit when redeeming for groceries at Safeway that I’m aware of.

It is Shell. How could you can’t find Shell in Chicago.

Celia
Celia

I get it. Shell in Chicago suburbs is notoriously 20 cents more than Mobil which In turn is about 20 cents more than Costco. Might be different in other regions.

Larry
Larry

I thought Safeway/Jewel rewards can only get a max of $0.20 off per gallon. Of course I can find a Shell gas in Chicago. On the Jewel/Osco version of the J4U app, it says “ 1 Reward = 10¢ OFF per/gal
Redeem for up to $0.20 OFF per/gal“

Sounds like the best option in Chicago is the grocery rewards.

Alan H
Alan H

I’ve used several hundred of these points… I conservatively estimate Safeway points to be worth approximately $1.50 each, but often you can do much better than that. Some examples:

$2 off any bread purchase for 1 point.
$7 off any meat purchase for 4 points (includes lunchmeats).
FREE pound of butter for 2 points (Yes, you can sometimes find butter on sale for $3, but this comes in handy when there isn’t a sale).
FREE avocado for 1 point… and other options that may be more valuable depending upon what type of foods you buy.

The above offers appear every calendar month, so you can use them at least twice for each point you accrue.

In addition, I believe Safeway had a $20 off groceries for 10 points offer last year around Christmas / New Year’s.

Of course, if you have a Safeway gas station and have a tank that can hold more than 15 gallons of gas, you will do better than $1.50 per point if you time it right.

Remember, if you buy the gift cards on December 1st, you’ll have one month longer to redeem the points than if you buy on November 30th (and would also qualify for any January offers if the $20 for 10 points offer shows up then).

Finally, just a head’s up… I bought a holiday themed Amazon gift card last December that came in a pretty mini box with a bow, but it did not code as a regular gift card for some reason and I did NOT get the bonus gift card points (Fortunately it was only a $25 gift card, so I let it go). So now I only stick to the more generic gift cards that are available year ’round.

Sorry for blabbing on – but I hope this helps.

Alan H
Alan H

Please note: in my post above I use the word “points” several times. It would have been more appropriate to use the word “rewards” instead (100 points = 1 reward).

Alan H
Alan H

Dang, no avocado for 1 reward offer for December, and Safeway changed a pound of butter from 2 rewards to 3… does Safeway read Doctor of Credit?

LnL
LnL

Alan H
For lunchmeats, do you know if it’s from the deli or does the discount apply to prepackaged ones such as Hilshire Farms, etc.?

Alan H
Alan H

LnL, I’m talking about the prepackaged ones. In my Safeway, those are located in/next to the Meat department. The deli is in the exact opposite end of the store, and is considered a separate dept. – so I doubt very much that would qualify as “Meat” (even if it is).

Hmm, right now it gives me that offer only on Dominos. Presumably, this will be added on the 29th. This did not track that great the last time, had to call.

Steve corrected the post elsewhere, it was only Home Depot that showed up. It will not show up in accounts until it’s available to use, so 11/29

Safeway has ebay gift cards also. This is like the best deal ever. Safeway gas is already the cheapest gas near me. I generally use safeway gift cards that I bought on Amazon with one of the various 20% off deals, plus they give you the cash price when paying with a gift card. 10 rewards is another dollar off. That’s about the best I can get in CA.

Steve

Plus another trick you can do at the gas station if prepaying with a gift card.

RM
RM

YMMV. Some cashiers will give you a different gift card as change, while others will give you cash.

Steve

Oooops. What I am seeing might just be limited to Home Depot gift card purchases.

awww all i see 10X on HD $150 or more gc. Thanks Steve for pointing that out! I actually was gonna buy a ton of gc’s thinking it was gcs in general.

Will this work with my loyalty card or do I have to sign up for an online account?

Celia

It will show up in your Just4U offers on your loyalty account, presumably on 11/29, that you’ll have to clip.

Even when bringing in the newspaper barcode?

The points have to attach to a loyalty account.

Alan H

Loyalty card + ad barcode coupon *should* work fine.

Calvin
Calvin

What does that mean:
Gift card purchases must be made in a single transaction.

Can I buy more than 1 card?
Can it only be used once per loyalty card?

RM
RM

Sounds like it’s a one-time coupon per loyalty card, with whatever cards you want to buy purchased together.

Haven

Here in SoCal AFAIK from Vons you can redeem 200 points for 20c off per galon at Chevron, while from Ralphs you can redeem 1000 points for $1 off per galon at Shell.
Well technically the 1000p redemption at Ralphs was only a temporary promotion but it has been running ever since. Not sure if same thing happens at Vons program.

RM
RM

Haven You can redeem 1000 points for $1 off at Vons-owned stations, but there are only about 10 of them around in So. Cal. There are many more Safeway stations in the Bay Area/Sacramento.

My Jewel J4U is linked to my Google Voice Number. Any problems registering my mobile number on a second J4U account?

Kien
Kien

Not a problem at all. You don’t even have to register a phone number and leave it blank.

Celia
Celia

Kien How would you use your loyalty card at the store without a phone number? That’s the user ID.

But to answer SOZ yes, you can use your mobile number to register for another account.

Kien
Kien

Well, you would need to get a physical card at the store. Then you do not need a phone number, but you do need your card or the card number that the cashier must enter if you are to use that account. Then you go online and register the card with an email to login.

Rebecca
Rebecca

Kien
Why does the card have to be registered online? Wouldn’t the ad’s barcode work?

Kien
Kien

You need to register it to redeem your rewards like for grocery or other J4u promos. You could just use the card for gas then you wouldn’t have to register. Unless you Are planning on just getting $100 or less in GCs and use it only for gas or you have ways to utilize all the rewards for gas only, then there is no requirement to register. The rewards conversion into grocery $ is like getting a similar discount on the GC so registration is required to redeem them for grocery or cash back (if you know some tricks and have lots of rewards to redeem).

Calvin
Calvin

Kien
Any tricks you might want to share? Not sure how many people are still reading this. Thank you

Kien
Kien

No tricks. If you want to redeem the gas rewards for grocery then you need to register or sign up for an online account. So you will need an email address and either a card number or a phone number to register. Then you will have all the privileges to use your rewards(redeem them) for grocery instead of gas and also load any promotional coupons or special Just4You promotion like for 8x or 10x rewards On specific GC or $10 off a Visa or Mastercard coupon.

This should stack with the following:
Domino: 18X points
Google Play: 16X points
iTunes: extra 15% discount
All stacking expires on 11/30 except for Google Play it’s 12/4
Some region also gets 2X reward points on your next shopping trip (assuming it’s mostly for grocery, but wondering if it would apply to gift cards as well). This would increase your rewards point by 1, so 19X for Domino, 17X for Google Play

Celia
Celia

Also Home Depot 10x so 20x if it stacks.

My Google Play would stack to 18x and Dominos 20x. Possibly varies by store brand.

The 2x bonus only applies to grocery IME.

Kien
Kien

I see the Home Depot is J4U personalized only and not on all accounts. Yes stacking Home Depot would give you 18X points.. No it does not add up to 20 because 2X points is counted twice, so the stacking only gives you 18X instead of 20X. The math is like this if that will help explain it.
Normal base GC rewards is 2X points
Each J4U Home Depot bonus adds 8X points to your base (to give an effective 10X points)
Paper Coupon or sometimes automatic promotions for 10X points is actually a bonus of 8X points bonus added to the base/normal 2X points that are already applied. The base amount of 2X is not counted twice. In summary the points are calculated as:
2X Base
8X Bonus/J4u
8X Bonus/Paper or generic or automatic coupon
Total is 10X if there is no stacking or… +8X=18X if you do stack, not 20X.

Same math applies to Dominos or to the one day overlap last week for the Happy Eats or Dining/Dominos J4U stacking with all the dining GC.

Has anyone tried the double stacking for the Home Depot 10x and the 10x general gift card j4u to see if it works? thanks

I just bought a $430 HDGC with both offers and I received 86 rewards (exactly 20x). So yes it does work.

Not sure where the 18x number is coming from that others are reporting.

Coupon is now available on J4U. The online coupon says it is unlimited use. This contradicts the circular in my region (So. Cal.), which says that there is a limit of one transaction per household for the entire promotional period. https://circulars-prod.cpnscdn.com/pdf-cache/Vons/19_48_SOC_WC_ALV/stores/03208.pdf (The Jewel/Osco circular Doc used above does not have this limitation.)

I would be curious about DPs as to whether anyone was able to do this deal more than once on the same account, particularly from regions that have a circular with the one transaction per household limitation.

Celia
Celia

It also has an expiration date of 12/5 instead of 12/3.

It’s my scan in the post, listed as one offer per transaction, but That could be construed as one card per transaction. I have a couple of accounts and can only use so many rewards. I like that it goes into December so that it can push the expiration date.

RM
RM

Celia Weird, I hadn’t noticed until you pointed it out, but my J4U coupon also expires 12/5, even though my local circular says 12/3.

I have not been able to find any other region that has a circular limitation similar to So. Cal. I guess someone here will have to be the guinea pig and try it.

Superworm

Can I buy multiple gift cards in one purchase? A poster on another site claims that only the first of multiple gift cards will get the bonus. My local safeway has chickfila gift cards, but only in $10. TIA for any data points

Greg “Gift card purchases must be made in a single transaction” would seem to suggest that you can buy multiple cards at the same time and get the bonus. Otherwise, why bother to specify this? But I am only guessing.

the $25 shopping voucher deal when you buy $150 in gift cards from brands like Lowe’s, Chipotle, Hotels.com, Gap, and more.

I could not find this info anywhere on jewel
The link says this expired. Any suggestions? Otherwise I do want some some Lowe’s gift cards

Greg
Greg

I just did it at my local safeway and the coupon printed off fine. It is not a j4u offer. When you go to the gift card section there should be a largish sign that advertises the offer, and then the individual gift cards that it applies to have small ‘give the gift of stocking stuffers’ cardboard signs over them. My printed coupon expires 12/6, so I guess they only give you a week to use it.

The coupon is a $25 off a minimum of $25 or more.
