Our Verdict

I’m guessing the Best Buy deal will be popular, shame that there is a limit of one. Make sure to use a card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases.

Is there any way to use best buy gift cards for something other than merchandise? Buy 3rd party gcs at BB with BB gcs doesnt work anymore right?

Gift card conversion like that is dead at Best buy. You can sell BB GC to cardpool for 88% of value. Small profit there but not scaleable to anything meaningful unfortunately.

Anybody know from experience if there’s a limit to the # of best buy GCs that can be used in-store for a purchase? Looking to buy a ~$700+tax item which would mean I’d need to use about 15 x $50 cards at the register. The savings from buying the cards through Safeway are fairly meaningful for this item since it doesn’t go on sale much and is the same price everywhere

Unless you have multiple loyalty accounts, the coupon is one per household so not sure how you can buy 15.

It’s easy to get multiple Safeway accounts with extra emails/dummy phone numbers – no concerns on that end, only on the redemption at Best Buy 🙂

Unlike VISA/MC gift card offers these DO earn reward points if you are calculating whether the offer is worthwhile. Spending $50 will generate 1 reward which is worth either 10 cents/gal at Chevron/Safeway branded gas stations OR $1 off next grocery purchase (or free various food items). Choosing to use the reward in-store is like getting at least 2% back on the $50 spend alone in addition to whatever you earn on the credit card you use for this offer.

If you can maximize your use of the points on gas (25gal), these points are worth 2.5cpp. In my area, the gas stations that these points work on are more expensive, and they charge a higher rate for using a card, so they aren’t worth it.

Groceries are an excellent alternative use for these points. For one shining moment last month, they offered a $20 off coupon for 10 rewards(1000 points), which made the points worth 2cpp.

I don’t have that coupon this month unfortunately, so the next most efficient use of points is for the $7 off meat for 4 rewards, which works out to 1.75cpp. There are other redemption options worth between 1.4 and 1.5cpp. As far as I can tell, in any given month you can spend 18 rewards and get coupons worth $27 off groceries, which is exactly 1.5cpp.

After that, the value of spending the points for groceries drops sharply. Too bad they didn’t keep offering the $20 off coupon.

It’s interesting that my local store have these cards and we don’t even have the stores unless you’re willing to take a plane and fly to another island or state.
