Southwest Offering 25,000 Compensation Miles To Some Customers

The Offer

No direct link to offer, sent out via e-mail. Subject line is ‘A message from Southwest CEO Bob Jordan’

  • Southwest is offering some customers 25,000 miles as an apology for travel issues during the busy holiday period

Our Verdict

This is in addition to compensating customers for any reasonable expenses, fee free changes and extending companion pass for one month. Points do not count towards the companion pass unfortunately.

Redeemed a code and the website accepted it but got an email a few hours later titled “Rapid Rewards® Partnership Points – Certificate Code Failure” with a message that included “Your attempt to claim Rapid Rewards Points awarded to you by SWA Customer Loyalty could not be completed because of a

Claim Cancellation Summary”

The first time when I copied my Rapid Rewards member # from the website I left the leading zero in but the second time I removed it and it posted immediately. Not sure if that made the difference.

WSJ article says they were issuing these points to people who had flights impacted between 12/24 and 1/2. I had a flight to Denver on 1/2 cancelled and yet have received nothing. Have been a longtime loyal Southwest fan, but even I have my breaking point. Not feeling the LUV.

Just got an email today. Got 5 codes, one for each passenger.

Did you have five separate confirmations or were they all on one? Do you know if each had a separate rapid reward number?

My wife and the kids were all on one confirmation and my wife is the only one who had a rapid reward number. We only received one code and was wondering why some received multiple codes when we only received one

We had flights set for 12/31 (and a 1/7 return). Partly because of the chaos in the days before, we canceled. One flight was paid with points, the 2nd was a companion pass.
We got the 25k link for the point fare, but nothing for the companion pass.
The 25k credit was available to apply to either (or any other) RR account. Just redeemed it today – and a little curious if it might count toward Companion, as that expires for us at the end of February.

My points posted just a few minutes later – they do NOT qualify for Companion Pass

Had a flight for me an my companion (free flyer) to visit family in Iowa cancelled. Received the email for both of us and was surprised that my companion was eligible as well. Went over to register and the points were in my bank within a few hours. Thankfully, although our flights were scuttled, we were not stranded along the way. So, for me, this is a great gift. I do understand others with much more negative experiences. However, I do acknowledge that Southwest did not have to do this and we accept their apology. This apology goes as far as them upgrading their systems to prevent another breakdown. Sad to see how Southwest, which was once considered the best run airline now getting washed in such a negative light (justifiably so). I don’t think this would have happened had Herb Kelleher been in charge.

Southwest doesn’t have miles. Southwest calls their currency points.

I received the points but my companion did not. Sad since we both had to pay for new flights even if they were flying free with SW.

Got the email this morning.

Still feeling like this is the final straw for Southwest for me and my family. Really don’t like how they ignored this issue for years despite being warned by employees and unions.

Still, not sure if United or Delta are any better. Been flying Southwest so long, it’s all I’m used to anymore

Pretty big assumption to say they’ve simply ignored it. That may be the perspective of various affected roles within the company since the problem obviously hasn’t been solved, but what SW has to do is massive in scope. Even with no insider knowledge on what has been done so far, in a heart beat I’d bet the farm that what they’ve already spent trying to solve this problem runs in the many millions.

I’m not saying they didn’t get themselves into this situation through poor (or at least cavalier) decision making though.

That’s the thing…it isn’t an assumption at all. It’s a known fact at this point that the pilot’s union had warned leadership of the aging software. Failure to replace it means, by definition, they ignored it.

No other airline had this issue. Southwest is alone in this

It should be obvious that there is a huge situational expanse between “know about the problem” and “fixed the problem” but if not you can simply jump it with blind assumptions. I’m sure some representing the pilots union assume similarly to you, that it’s as simple as calling up Microsoft and shelling out for the latest version of office 365 and ask, why ain’t they dun that yet? But a complete re-engineering of the proprietary systems this massive company operates on is a monumental undertaking. For better or for worse, being different has given Southwest a lot of die hard fans. But they are feeling the pain now that it means what they have to do to fix this has never been done before, not by other airlines or anyone else. I fear that to survive it they will have to effectively end southwest as we know it. But I’ve got my fingers crossed. Hopefully they’ll at least still have companion pass.

BTW you might want to look up the definition of definition
