The Offer

Direct link to offer  (“see upcoming ad” page  2)

  • Staples is offering no purchase fees on $200 Visa gift cards at Staples stores.

The Fine Print

  • Valid 1/12-1/18
  • Limit one per customer

Our Verdict

Been a lot of good office supply store gift card promotions lately, but it’s always like this in the busy shopping season.  Use a card that earns at a high rate on office supply stores. Some people also have a good Chase offer.

So the poor staples reps around me are clueless. I hit 3 stores for 4k each (2p back to back). 4th store the cashier calls over the radio for “whats the limit on visa cards”, a grey shirt comes over “its a 1k limit, but you know the be safe I’d only do 4 cards”. I’m just standing there in awe of the various levels of misinformation. Anyway I did a total of 18k in Staples visa this week.

The manager at my go to Staples must have something against me. They are the only store I frequent that prints and highlight the one per person clause. I usually try to hit the store twice a day during the promotion and last night, the kid at the register said ‘sorry, we’ve already seen you here today. The limit is 1 per day but you are more than welcome to come back tomorrow.”
This is starting to become a hassle but the free UR points are so addicting….

Count your blessings. The ****head here had me banned for dropping in twice a day.

Every store manager is different. Some strictly enforce a limit and others not. YMMV.

Can someone please confirm if i can still apply for Amex Bluebird and can use these Visa GCs for loading it at Walmart? Or does it only work for legacy/grandfathered accounts? Thanks.

Thanks. I will apply.for BB. Do I go to Cust Service or Cashier for loading? What do I ask them to do in a way that doesn’t jeopardize use of Visa GC for loading. Thx.

One of my VGC bought at Safeway was the subject of fraud. It was used the next day after bought it in a city 600 miles away from where I live. I have opened a fraud case with BlackHawk, opened a dispute case with my credit card and filed a police report. Unfortunately, since the VGC itself was the subject of fraud and not the credit card, my credit card company made me pay the amount upfront and then they will dispute it with the merchant. So make sure you understand how your credit card company handles disputes (for example Amex gives an immediate credit even for disputes)

The customer service of Blackhawk sucks. I almost suspect they will open a case and close it after a few weeks without actually putting too much effort into recovering the funds and I will have to resort to small claims court to recover my funds.

They’ll pay out, but they’ll probably make you jump through hoops to get the replacement VGC. It took me over a month of faxing and sending receipts, etc., when it happened to me last year.

Staples Visa GC is by Metabank and not BlackHawk Network (BHN). Haven’t had any issues with Metabank Visa GC so far. Keeping fingers crossed.

Staples Visa GCs are offered by either Metabank or Sunrise Bank. Two stores had Metabnk only whereas the 3rd store I visited had offered by both banks. The outside packaging is the same. I chose Metabank ones.

Staples is still on Payce for 5% cashback (up to $5). I had quite a few of my VGC purchases track last month.

Love this promo! It seems like we can count on this promo every 4-6 weeks.

I started to lose my interest in Staples GC deals. It started with no limit, can pay with staples GC, to now 1 per customer limit and can’t even split payment. Too much hassle to get 1000 UR pts.

Stated in comments earlier “in store only” but now that it is active has anyone been able to do it online?

Does staple do split charge? My BofA and Chase cards have 10% off upto 6$. Be great if can split it to get 12$ and 1.5% (no ink) on 200$ also.

Yes though some cashiers are clueless. I usually put the first $60 on th BoA and the rest on ink or simply cash.
