[Expired] Staples: No Purchase Fee On $200 Visa Gift Cards (1/12-1/18)

Deal has expired, view more Staples deals by clicking here.

The Offer

Direct link to offer  (“see upcoming ad” page  2)

  • Staples is offering no purchase fees on $200 Visa gift cards at Staples stores.

The Fine Print

  • Valid 1/12-1/18
  • Limit one per customer

Our Verdict

Been a lot of good office supply store gift card promotions lately, but it’s always like this in the busy shopping season.  Use a card that earns at a high rate on office supply stores. Some people also have a good Chase offer.

The 2 Staples near me limit only 1 per day. Anyone else with better luck?

How does one cash them out, other then to slowly use them for purchases.walmart money order in ny gives us hard time, post office mo is dead etc.just having hard time to cash them out . Any ideas.????

Buy GCs or merchandise and then resell is one option.

Jason Smith
Jason Smith

Be careful when purchasing merchandise, if you have ever have to do a chargeback, you have very little chance of winning. I know from experience.

James Bond

Good point. Can you explain the chargeback issue you ran into?

Jason Smith
Jason Smith

I bought a couple of charging cables from Texas Instruments for my childrens calculators. The cost was around $30. FedEx claimed they delivered the package but i never got it. TI refused to do anything and told me I had to deal with FedEX. After numerous calls to FedEx, they finally admitted they delivered it to the wrong house and refunded the shipping cost. They said it got refunded to the shipper . I called TI and they claimed they never got refunded from FedEx. I called FedEx and they said we refunded TI. Finally, I had enough of this runaround and filed a chargeback with Blackhawk Network. I filled out all their paperwork and it took them 3 months to investigate and then ruled against me.

The point here is, a regular credit card, you file a chargeback and they refund you and put the onus on the seller, but with these prepaids the companies like Blackhawk Network have no incentive to refund you. You are SOL.

I wonder if this was a unique experience or a difference between issuer’s? I’ve had to file disputes twice for fraud transactions and once to an eBay seller with US Bank VGC . ( Ebay: extra fees for vacation not mentioned in the listing.) Ebay refused to refund even though the seller had violated eBay’s policy.( for reference eBay requires that all sellers post a message in their listing that all fees have been disclosed.)

Perhaps US Bank is better at managing disputes because they also issue actual credit cards. Or perhaps your dispute was too much for them because the seller had proof of delivery even if it wasn’t true.

What’s the point if buying gift cards with these? Then you can just buy gift cards directly, no need to bother with the Visa cards.

I believe these are used for manufactured spending by using them to pay the bills on credit cards used to purchase them.

Lantean
Lantean

Not many credit card issuers still take debit card payments.

MW

The point is some credit cards have 3x or 5x points on business supply stores. So find a card that gives 5x points, but the $200 cards and earn 1000 points. You can rack up points quickly

If you’re asking this, you can ignore this promotion.

Because you’re right: there’s no point.

I thought these are used for manufactured spending by using them to pay bills on credit cards used to purchase them?

Is that possible ? How does one pay off credit cards by using visa /master GC ?

It has been my experience that when returning an item purchased at Walmart… they give cash back if a Visa gc was used. Just my experience. 1 John 4 7-8

Yep, I have a couple Staples around me that allow multiple gift card purchases. I don’t push my luck though and never buy more than 2 or 3. I know that would draw attention.

Daniel Smithson
Daniel Smithson

No need to worry about drawing attention. Just ask an employee what their gift card limit is per day. My local Staples has a $2,000 per day limit so I always buy 10 at a time… Never a problem.

Rob
Rob

I used to try to stay under the radar buying 1 at a time, and they used to fuss a bit if I tried buying 2. After all these sales though, the managers now recognize me and let me buy up to 10 at a time multiple times per week. Also, when they run out on the rack, they’ve tipped me off that they keep a stash hidden elsewhere and give me some from there. I don’t know why – I asked if they make any money on these and one manager said “not really.” Maybe they get enough gift card fraudsters that it’s enough for them to know a customer is reliable.

It’s pretty obvious that they’re using these “deals” to drive up revenue numbers. Doesn’t benefit the rank and filers much but management can expect big bonuses.

Will us bank nerfed me? A large purchase I was going to make fell through and I’m running out of time to meet minimum spend for sign up bonus

Vanson

I’m in the same boat. Might be a fraud alert? I had to call in to US Bank a couple of times when I first got the card in order to clear the hold. Hold won’t clear immediately either; had to wait until the next business day to make the purchase.

Which Gift Cards are best for purchase? I am buying $500 Visa ones with a $6.95 activation fee in grocery stores, but I feel like it is not the best option. Does anybody know some sweeter deal?

Peek

Crusty Crab I do these deals at my local store and have two accounts so I can do $1000 getting money back rather than paying the fees, not enough to do a huge amount of MS but great to meet spending requirements. The offer seems to come around every few months (this one is expired): https://www.doctorofcredit.com/safeway-save-10-on-100-visa-giftcard-vons-randalls-albertsons-tom-thumb-acme-jewel-shaws-2/

Make sure you stash at least one extra GC. It’s easier to cut the cocaine lines.

Nice. It had actually been a few weeks. I’m hoping OD has another one soon as I got a $10 offer on a couple of Chase cards.

Well the point is.the days of big spending and flipping are over.these deals are good only if you buy 5 or 6 of them pay some bills and then wait till next time staples has a deal & do it again.i bought 30 last time and still have a lot of them.i pay my rent with them they charge 3 percent so I am left with making 2 percent on them ..ok my thoughts

scott
scott

Not true. I was able to get a BB and Serve card from Amex again after being shutdown a few years ago. I’ve been liquidating thousands of dollars worth the last few months. Plus my local WM is friendly with money orders.

Ken
Ken

IDK if you are in the same situation. My BB is also shut down few years back (not able to load additional fund) but I never close the account. It is still active. Do I have to do anything else to reactivate the “load” function? Thank you.

scott
scott

I would guess that since that card was shut down that you can’t just reactivate the “load” function. Better to cancel it and get a new one.

Joshua
Joshua

I’m good with BB but haven’t tried Serve. Are Vanillas good w/ Serve still (thinking about tapping into WM & Sams too)? Thinking about doing Vanillas w/ Serve at DG and FD but haven’t figured out the most streamlined way.

I’ve been doing thousands with BB b/c of the OD/OM and Staples deals the last few months (+ I have 2 CICs). I feel like MOs are only worth it w/ SMGCs because they’re so easy.

Sarah D
Sarah D

Bb and serve shutdown seems inevitable now, not a long term plan. MO for $200s seems not worth (# of swipes has always seemed like the limiting factor) especially when $1000s exist. I just got my CIC but it feels pointless and not worth it.

Is the $25k max on the CIC calendar year or card anniversary? Side note: What a nice problem to have.

I was hoping this deal would pop up again just in time to capitalize on the Chase/BofA cash back offers (expiring 1-23-20). I got 10% cash back ($6 max) at Staples on my CFU.

Let’s go!

I’m surprised you’re the first to mention the CO. Sadly, my non-Ink one is effectively useless to me (10% up to $6) for this

Steve

It’s a little useful, since you can split payment; put $60 on that card and the rest on your Ink.

Celia
Celia

+1 I do that every time. $60 on the BoA card and the rest on CIC.

qmc
qmc

My only store is a no-split, limit-1 store that keeps all the cards behind the counter during these weeks. The plus side of it is I can go on Friday and they’re not sold out.

Anyways… 5x on $60 is 300UR which most people value at about $4.50, $6 is $6 of course, so it’s not a big issue to me. It’s not like you can get that $6 repeatedly, so it’s really just $1.50 less once.

Love this site for all it has given me, but the comments section with all these Johnny and Jane come latelys is a pain. It’s not so much that there’s new people, it’s that they refuse to click the links to the basics that are already on this site.

Does staple do split charge? My BofA and Chase cards have 10% off upto 6$. Be great if can split it to get 12$ and 1.5% (no ink) on 200$ also.

Celia
Celia

Yes though some cashiers are clueless. I usually put the first $60 on th BoA and the rest on ink or simply cash.
