The Offer

No direct link, sent via e-mail. Subject line is ‘Grab this offer with your groceries’

  • American Express is offering some Blue Cash Everyday cardholders an additional 1% cash back on grocery purchases (making it 4% cash back on grocery purchases) on up to $1,000 in spend until June 30th, 2018.

The Fine Print

  • You will receive an additional reward of 1% cash back (for a total of 4% or 3%, depending on whether you have exceeded $6,000 in U.S. supermarket purchases for the calendar year) on the first $1,000 of eligible purchases at supermarkets located in the U.S. (superstores and warehouse clubs are not considered supermarkets) between May 19, 2018 and June 30, 2018.
  • You will earn additional cash back only on eligible purchases and in the form of Blue Cash Reward Dollars (reward dollars).
  • These reward dollars will be applied 6-8 weeks after transactions are posted to your account. Eligible purchases are purchases for goods and services minus returns and other credits.
  • Eligible purchases do NOT include fees or interest charges, balance transfers, cash advances, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, purchases of gift cards, person-to-person payments, or purchases of other cash equivalents.
  • Eligible purchases can be made by the Basic Card Member and any Additional Card Members on a single Card Account. To receive the additional higher percentage reward, your account must not be cancelled or past due at the time of fulfillment.
  • Offer ends June 30, 2018. American Express reserves the right to modify or revoke offer at any time.
  • Purchases may fall outside of the promotional purchase period (and therefore not qualify for the additional cash back) in some cases, such as a delay in merchants submitting transactions to us or if the purchase date differs from the date you made the transaction. (For example, if you buy goods online, the purchase date may be the date the goods are shipped).
  • For questions regarding your Card account, please call the number on the back of your Card.

Our Verdict

I suspect they are offering this in an attempt to make the card more attractive this quarter as both the Chase Freedom & Discover it are offering 5% cash back on grocery store purchases. This is an easy category for a lot of readers to put spend into so this is a welcomed offer.

Not sure why people are worried when the cash back comes out. I have seven cash back cards. When I get $25 or more, sure it is nice, but not a big deal. Received my Nusenda last Sept and still have not hit the $50 cash out. But I will and it will be a nice reward next month.

What was your credit score? I know nusenda is very inquiry sensitive

4% still isn’t as good as 5% plus Amex is slow to pay out rewards (takes two statement cycles to receive cashback) and are limited to $25 minimum cash outs.

Amex requires $25 minimum redemption. Discover has 5% grocery store cash back this quarter and no minimum requirements for redemption. This is a no brainer.

Abe probably doesn’t MS, so cards like the EDP/BCP with a $6k annual max are more than enough for people like him. This card is a godsend since golden1cu tends to be very lax with MS and MOs in general.

How does this encourage usage if CHASE Freedom and DISC are still a percent higher? If AMEX had doubled the BCE to 6% and increased the BCP to 7 or 8% they’d be an industry leader for the next 5 weeks.

Why “4% or 3%”? Isn’t it just 2% if you are above the $6K?
