Our Verdict
Amtrak points are tied to the cash value of a fare, so good to purchase on sale (I’m assuming you can get this 30% discount when doing award travel but I don’t know for sure). Same is true for Southwest and they have a good rebooking policy as well if your flight drops in price you basically can request the difference.
