[Confirmed] TSA Airport Security No Longer Requires Removing Shoes (Effective Today, 7/7/25)

Update 7/8/25: This has now been publicized by the White House press secretary and thus appears to be confirmed. Still no official word from TSA. Another update: confirmed now with official TSA announcement.

Original Post 7/7/25:

Starting today, July 7, 2025, travelers do not have to remove their shoes when going through airport security. That includes almost all travelers, even those who do not have TSA-Precheck. Someone who does not have REAL ID identification will have to remove their shoes.

Wow, nice, I did not see this coming.

Precheck is still better: shorter line, no unpacking of carryon, and metal detector instead of radiation.

It’s overall positive for the system. No user is worse off and some are strictly better off. Why are you complaining?

It is the damn metal detecting door. A number of times, I was asked to remove my shoes to stop the beeping of the door. The agent told me the shoes usually will cause the door to beep. My shoes have no metal component. Will TSA adjust the sensitivity of their beeping doors?

Wtf kind of shoes are you wearing? You most definitely have some kind of metal in them if they’re setting off a metal (Eddy current) detector

Now lets get TSA to be more clear about all their other rules. Feels like every time I go through TSA the rules change from the last time. To remove electronics and toiletries or not, to put bag in tray or not, etc. And then they yell at you for not doing it the way they want when they didn’t bother to say the rules

If you have TSA Precheck, you don’t worry about half the stuff they change. Just the size and type of power bank you travel

I think it just depends on that agent’s mood.

These rules are dependent on how modern their scanning equipment is. The big white cocoon-like MRI-looking scanners are the most modern, where laptops can stay in. The older looking rectangular scanners require laptops to be out.

TSA should be completely removed. Government has made flying so miserable and inefficient.

I don’t think it’s fair to put all the blame for transforming the dream of flight into a nightmare on the government. The airlines deserve some of the credit too.

You must not travel much if you think TSA is reason flying is miserable and inefficient.

You want people bringing bombs and guns on airplanes?

If I opposed government nationalizing shoes or food production you’d say I want people to be shoeless and starve to death.

Nothing generates clicks and views like a rumor followed by a confirmed rumor.

Boots could still be an issue – Doc Martens, hiking, construction, etc.

I have a friend who works for TSA at ORD in Chicago. This is confirmed and effective today but may not be at all airports. You will only need to remove your shoes if the body scanner has an indication.
