Walmart: Trade In A Car Seat & Get A $30 Giftcard (No Booster Seats, September 16th – 30th) – Ending Early

Update 9/21/19: According to USA Today this event is ending tonight, due to an overwhelming response. Hat tip to reader Gadget

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Walmart has partnered with Terracycle and from September 16th to September 30th you can trade in a car seat at participating stores and receive a $30 Walmart gift card

The Fine Print

  • Limit 2 trade-ins per household
  • Any car seat brand accepted
  • Booster seats are not eligible for trade in

Our Verdict

I would have thought that most car seats would be worth more than $30 and it’s something that could be reused by giving it to a friend or family member. I guess if you have a really terrible one that isn’t safe anymore or worth less than $30 then this promotion is worth considering.

Just an FYI car seats do expire because the plastic breaks down and buying a car seat second hand could be dangerous because you don’t know if they have been in an accident. Target is also doing this Sept 3-13 and you get a 20% off coupon

This is my understanding as well. But, I must admit I question whether those with financial interests are taking advantage of societies generally overcautious nature when it comes to children. I mean, plastic is used in all sorts of safety related equipment and I am not aware of many product expiration dates due to plastic degradation.

Most safety-related plastics do break down as well. Bicycle helmets for example should be replaced every 5 years.

You have good reasons to question. Checkout Steven Levitt (Freakonomics) Ted talk on car seats.

lenin1991
lenin1991

In the 14 years since that Ted talk, it has been debunked again and again in peer-reviewed medical journals, without any car seat funding, each to a much higher degree of peer review than their “study” was ever subjected.

Many peeps just don’t like used items. They see a baby confined in something not necessarily “clean” or whatever else that is important in their minds.

And, other parts of plastic could break down, ie, parts worn down where the angle of the sitting is no longer strong causing a limpness gap in the seat belt stretched across the carseat and gradual lapse in stability. Cheap and smaller, older models.

All summer long we’ve been treated to endless stories of how plastic neeeeever breaks down, how it ends up clogging the oceans, in seals’ noses, etc. etc……. and yet now ya tell us “plastic breaks down”….. (and somebody else below says that only your local fire dept can install them correctly…..) Worse, the omnipresent, “experts say” ….. (riiiight…. as if that magical phrase automatically makes it so) that only they (the experts) can install seats properly…..

(and my daughter-in-law tells me that we can’t see grandson unless we schedule our visits around his nap times….. and she smiles & so quickly (non) reasons, “that’s what the experts say”)…..

Beam me up. (but sure, we’ll cash-in on the old car seats that were once good enough for our kids…. Always game to try out new designs, based on reason, not scare-mongering about plastic breaking down, per se)

IIRC they have an expiration and can’t be resold by 2nd hand shops, but can be given away or sold at like garage sales ( but I don’t know why anyone would want their kids using someone else car seat unless they are family).

The car seats have expiration dates . If seat is past date or close to it not a bad deal . Deals like this come around this time a year . This is a good one because it does not require you to buy a new seat . When I see someone throw a seat out , I put it in my yard and cash them in . Have two ready to redeem .

Not as good as the ikea dresser recall . Go by college off campus housing ,at end of semester , cash them at ikea. Dresser recall. Can get full original price

By trade in, do you have to buy a new one? Or you just sell your old one for $30?

I can’t find the answer either.

You don’t need to buy a new car seat, just get rid of an old one

Is there a link that states this?

Burton

Will’s link above takes you to the walmart site where it says “Recycle the car seat your kiddo’s outgrown & get a $30 Walmart gift card.” No reference to buying a new one or that the GC must be used to buy a new one.

They do this to get the old car seats out of circulation vs being handed down from family to family.

Also, I imagine most families would have already replaced their car seat before trading the old one in vs having a screaming kid running around while you try to unpackage and install a new car seat. That is something I want to do in my garage, by myself, so I can make sure it is properly installed.

This makes the assumption that most families only has one set of car seats. In my experience most families have each car equipped with car seat(s). Often even the grandparents cars.

One could replace car seat(s) in one car and still have the other one fully functional.

I’ve been waiting for something like this. My youngest outgrew the infant car seat and it is expiring soon so we can’t pass it along to someone else. I wanted it to be recycled and not just thrown in the trash so this is a win-win.

I wonder how much they go for on craigslist…

Found someone asking for a dollar each.

Damn, I just threw out two car seats because i didn’t want them to sit in my garage. I was aware of the regular events at target that give you 20% off a new car seat, but that offer is not really competitive. I would have taken the $30 Walmart gift card though.

Stalking 2 via FB Freecycle Forum for our county.
TIP: you’d be amazed at other useful stuff folks giveaway to avoid the disposal fees and/or to declutter their garages/basements. (eg pianos)

I just took 2 to the dump. But I dont shop at Walmart .

Terry B.

It looks like people are getting them at the dump to turn in! Terrible and smelly. Limit 2 per family for the gift cards, though.

Can you use a WM GC to buy a 3rd party GC? I want to get in and out of there ASAP.

Thanks DoC – put this on my calendar to do on Sep 16 ! It’s nice that you don’t have to buy a new one. We loan out our old ones when visitors come to town and various neighboring grandparents need an emergency seat for their cars/vans/suvs

A used car seat worth closer to what was paid at msrp or some percentage off? Not happening. One could probably not get $30 at a yard sale for one used but in good condition. For whatever reason this is being offered, it is something beneficial. I hope to qualify in my area and move one out of my garage.

Sorry, Didn’t express thanks for the post, DOC. Link does show my area participation. If this works on 9/16, this is a benefit (a blessing). Thanks!

Not sure why so many comments about plastic…are they asking anyone to buy used car seats? They are offering a trade in

Gadget 🕵️

The comments about the plastic were because DoC was under the impression a car seat would be worth more by selling it to someone else vs taking this deal. But they expire, and the integrity of the seat can’t be trusted from an unknown person, so they aren’t something that you can sell, usually. (But I sure it happens)

Time to check the garage and see if we have any that we should have gotten rid of but haven’t!
