[YMMV] American Express Offering Generous Retention Bonuses

Reports are coming in of American Express offering generous retention bonuses for cardholders with an annual fee due. Whenever you have an annual fee due it’s always a good idea to call in to see if the card issuer will offer you something for keeping the card, we’ve discussed retention bonuses in depth before here. Obviously this is done on a case by case basis, but it looks like the back end that shows what offers representatives are allowed to offer is being more generous than normal. Some offers include:

  • $500 statement credit on Ameriprise Platinum
  • $150 for business gold
  • 30,000 Membership Rewards Points for Business Platinum (5,000 points instant, 25,000 points after $5,000 in spend within 90 days)
  • $100 statement credit on Business Platinum
  • $300 or 40,000 points on Platinum
  • 10,000 Membership Rewards after $1,500 in spend

When calling in it’s usually a good idea to have a reason why you want to cancel the card. American Express has increased the annual fees on a lot of cards recently, there has also been issues with the Uber Platinum credit as well.

I was recently offered and took 20k MR to keep my 2 year old Platinum after $3k spend. I was given an offer of 15k MR for $3k spend the year before. Both times I called fully intending to cancel and before given the offer.

I canceled my prg yesterday and they offered me 10k MR for $1500 spend in 3 months. At 20k I would have taken the offer, but 250$ fee, too high.

Mario, if your AF is hitting now or before April, you would have been grandfathered in to the $195 for one more year.

I called in yesterday for 2 year old prg card. No offer . Af is 195 and will hit on 26th this month. Wait a week or cancel ? TIA.

Cancel.

I would let the AF post and call again.

Always wait for the AF to post. You can cancel after that within 30 days and get a prompt full refund. At this point they may offer a nice retention bonus.

Do they usually have in writing that they will refund within 30 days?

$75 or 20k Marriott Points after $2k for SPG…

My SPG biz is coming to AF, it sounds like no deal Amexit 🙁

Zalmy

Keep it for the free night, it’s worth more than the annual fee

oh yeah! good call. I forgot about the perk after merger.

After the free night posts, then cancel, recycle the card next year and save the AF, plus get the free night.

anyone ever get retention offer on schwab platinum?

Andrew

Think you I read something on reddit about spending 10k plus in a year for it. With vgc being 1.2% fee and schwab being 1.25%… You can do it and break even.
Personally I just plan to triple dip mine in a few years and downgrade to green for a year and cancel.

Zalmy

Can you downgrade from Schwab directly to a green? Want to do this now

Called 1 month ago for my 2 yr Platinum and offered 30K MR but have to spend 40K…

Seems like a really lousy deal.

It may help to let the fee hit before trying retention.

I was offered $300 or 30k MR for 3k spend.

At what point is it worth it for you to keep then?

Kev

I use the airline and Saks credit for giftcards and the Uber credit every month so I took the offer.

Got absolutely nothing for Schwab Plat earlier this month, so canceled the card. Told rep concerned about fee, asked for any retention offers, but no dice.

The best was last year when I called to cancel my SPG Biz. They offered me 10,000 Starwood points (which would now be 30,000 Marriott points) without any spending incentive, just to keep it open.

Any no annual fee cards offer retention bonuses?

Dawg

Hahahah joking right?

Brad C

Not that crazy, while I’ve never heard of Amex offering a retention on no annual fee cards, Citi has offered retention/spending type bonuses on no annual fee cards before.

Eduard

Um…. I got $25 for my BCE for $1k spend. Called in and told them I didn’t need it. They offered 🙂

Why would a no-AF card offer a retention incentive? What exactly would they even need to incentivize you to take on but for an AF?

If you’re already calling because you’re cancelling they want to keep you as a customer. Very simple. You just need to have a good reason why you’re cancelling a free card

what do you call a good reason?

Do you simply call the number on the back of your card?

According the wiki of the retention thread in the Amex forum on FlyerTalk, it’s better to directly call:

Called to cancel personal Delta Gold card yesterday. Never transferred to live person. Wasn’t expecting RT offer, minimal spend. Account open for 13 months.

I was offered a forgiving pass by the RAT team if i pay the annual fee… 😊
