Our Verdict
This offer came around not long ago and many of us had success purchasing gift cards at Dollar General for $25 each or by splitting up the transaction on multiple cards at $25 each. They carry a huge selection of gift cards including Amazon, BP, Shell, Visa, restaurants, and more (photos here). Note that some people were told that gift cards are cash only.
If you want to resell the gift cards, you can purchase the gas gift cards and resell them at around 90% of their value. It may or may not be worth the hassle.
They also have lots of everyday items at good prices. If you want to use it for regular items, you can just purchase $25 Dollar General gift cards and use those up on the items. If you’re planning on purchasing third-party gift cards at DG then this may not work well and it may be wiser to purchase them directly with the Amex card.
The past offer was just one time per card; this one is 3 times and is more worthwhile, despite the pain of having to deal with $25 per card.
It’s also worth keeping an eye on DG Digital Coupons (signup required). They sometimes have coupons for third-party gift card purchase and there’s also many other useful coupons. Currently, the most interesting one I saw was $5 off $25 on most products sold in-store.
You can purchase $30 worth of items, apply the $5 coupon, pay with your registered Amex card; you’ll end up with $30 of products for $20. (Note to the math junkie: it can actually be slightly less than $30 of items since you only need to end up with $25 final charge, post-tax, on your Amex card.)
