Ask Discover For An Offer, Receive An Offer (2% Cash Back On All Purchases, 7% On Rotating Categories, $10 Bonuses & 0% APR)

The Offer

  • Discover seems to have a variety of offers for Discover it cardholders (wasn’t able to get it on Discover it Miles, I imagine those with the Discover it Secured will also be able to get these offers). The trick is, you need to ask to receive one. Easiest way to do that is by starting a live chat with them, then just ask if there are any current offers that can be applied for your account (some people have reported more success asking for an APR reduction and then when declined asking if there are any other offers that can be applied to your account). Here are some of the offers people have reported receiving:
    • Receive 2% cash back on all purchases and 7% cash back on the 5% rotating categories
    • Spend $100/$200 in 30 days, receive $10 cash back
    • Spend $1,000 in 30 days, receive $30/$20 cash back
    • 0% purchase APR for twelve months

Our Verdict

If you don’t receive an offer you like, you can ask for something else but in general asking for a specific bonus does not work. As always, be friendly and courteous and you’re more likely to receive a better offer. It’s always a good idea to regularly ask for bonuses with your credit card issuers, read this post to get started and then you can read Chuck’s recent experiences asking for retention bonuses.

If you try this, let us know what offer if any you received.

I called their Customer Service number and asked to speak with a relationship manager. She looked over my account and I mentioned I’ve been a Discover cardmember since ’07. The offer that I got was the -spend $200 in 30 days, receive $10 cash back.

I used their chat function. The representative said to checkout ‘Discover Deals’ and that there were no offers for my account even including the ones above.

Nothing interesting for me either besides the Six Flags and Discover Deals, haha…

Stupid 6 flags offer across all family members’ accounts. That’s it.

I called Discover last night. I was not eligible for any offers. I usually get targeted a few times a year for random offers that I cannot take advantage of (i.e. spend $1,500 per month for 5 months and get a $300 bonus).

Just got an email from them containing this:

“To show our appreciation, we are pleased to confirm that you will earn $10 when you make at least $100 in purchases with your card between 01/01/01 and 01/01/01.*”

Damn, I missed my opportunity by 14 years

I used to carry my Discover card with me all the time and was consistently spending ~$1000 a month with it but I completely stopped using it back in November. Many reasons for this: they dropped the 5% cashback on Hotels.com / Expedia.com, last quarter it was easier to use my Sallie Mae MC, and this quarter I’d rather use my Chase Freedom.

Anyway, I thought I’d be a great customer to be targeted for one of these offers but nope, nothing available on my account except for that Six Flags offer (it did sound like it needed to be activated).

I’m still glad I tried though because I didn’t know about the Six Flags offer. There was an offer last year for 5% back on up to $200 that I used to buy 4 season tickets, but according to the CSR I spoke to this new Six Flags offer is in addition to the previous one, has no limit, and is valid until December 31st. I’m planning on going to Six Flags at least a couple of times this year so it’s good to know.

Discover is now deluged by lots of calls asking for special offers since this has been posted on SD. as they say SD effect. Haven’t checked FW yet but if it’s there, that explains why many do not get any offers at all. I’ve known Discover to have one, if not the greatest, CS among all CCs; reps mostly aim to please but was surprised to read that many were not given any offer.
