Master List Of Gas Station Rewards Programs

This is a guest post that was submitted by Josh from Frugal Hack Me. I strongly recommend you follow him on twitter and read his website (or do what I do and add it to your feedly).

Almost every gas station chain has a rewards program nowadays, but just like the different credit card point currencies, they’re not created equal. In fact, some of them are vastly different. For example, some chains offer points, which are redeemable for gift cards, while others offer per gallon discounts. They all offer rewards, but depending on your preferences, some are better than others.

If you don’t already have a gas station preference, this post will help you decide what one you should put your loyalty in, based on their rewards program.

Master List of Gas Station Reward Programs

How They Work

These reward programs work similar to shopping portals. You get the reward or bonus on top of any credit card points, miles, or cash back you earn. So, there’s really no reason not to sign-up for one or all of these programs.

Guide

Name of Rewards Program (and link)

  • Sign-up Bonus: This is the bonus you receive for signing up with the program.
  • Everyday Bonus: This is the bonus you receive every time you swipe your card at the pump, regardless of whether you have any rewards in your account or not.
  • How to Earn: These are the different ways you can earn rewards with this program.
  • Gallon Limit: This is the gallon limit when you use rewards. For example, if you have  $2.00 off per gallon and there’s a 20 gallon limit, you can save a maximum of $40 if you use the whole 20 gallons.
  • Notes: This is where I can write any information pertaining to that specific rewards program.
  • Rating: This is where I will put my rating of the reward system. I haven’t tried all of these programs out, due to  many of them being region specific, but each rating is based on my research. Here is what the different ratings mean:
    • 1/5 – The rewards are far too difficult and/or expensive to earn and there’s no sign-up bonus or everyday bonus.
    • 2/5 – The rewards are a tad bit expensive to earn and there’s not an everyday bonus or a sign-up bonus.
    • 3/5 – The rewards are easy to earn, but there’s not an everyday bonus or a sign-up bonus.
    • 4/5 – The rewards are easy to earn and there’s an everyday bonus OR a sign-up bonus.
    • 5/5 – There is a sign-up bonus, an everyday bonus, and there are plenty of ways to earn rewards.

Different Programs

Acme Fresh Market Fuel Rewards

    • Misc Offers – Earn fuel discounts by buying promotional products. For example, earn $3 in fuel rewards when buying $25 worth of meat.
  • Gallon Limit: No Limit
  • Notes: This program does not earn money off the gallon, instead it earns actually money to use at the pump. The max your card can have is $500.
  • Rating: 3/5

BP Driver Rewards

  • Sign-up Bonus: $0.10 off per gallon when you register.

Marathon shouldn’t be missed. Their program is mediocre by itself (5 cents off, earn bigger discounts), but you can link it to Wyndham or Southwest to earn 2 points or 1 mile per gallon, respectively. The Wyndham points can then become AA or Delta miles. Just don’t accidentally spend your Southwest miles for 10 cents off per gallon.

Shell Fuel Rewards will now give you a discount for having IHG status, too: 5c/gal for all members, 6c for Platinum, 7c for Spire.

The Exxon Rewards+ program is now a 3c/gallon rebate program. It gives you 3 points per gallon and 100 points can be redeemed for $1 off your fill-up, so each point is effectively worth 3 cents and you get 3 cents per gallon. Unfortunately there is no status so the maximum you get is 3c/gallon unlike Shell where you can earn up to 5c/gallon but I find that often Exxon/Mobil is a couple cents cheaper than Shell in my area anyway.

I know this is an old post, but Shell Fuel Rewards comments should say will use your entire balance, or whatever is necessary to bring the gas price down to the minimum sales price allowed. I’ve seen and paid 1.9 cents/gallon and 10.9 cents/gallon as the minimum sales price.

So if you have 4.00/gallon in the program and gas is 3.00/gallon, it will use up 2.99/gallon and carry over the 1.01 to the next fill up.

I’ve saved about $900 this year using Shell Fuel Rewards. 😀

For the Ralphs (Kroger) fuel rewards program, the maximum discount is 20¢/gallon.

Kroger fuel points used at Shell gas stations can be up to $1.00 off per gallon but not at all locations. In Cincinnati and Dayton, it’s .10 cents max but in Columbus it’s up to $1.00. Unfortunately I haven’t found a web site that will tell you which Shell stations do or do not go above the .10 cent discount.

Can you combine Kroger and Shell Rewards at a Shell

To my knowledge, you cannot combine rewards at Shell. I worked for a Shell gas station for about 2 years. You can only pick one or the other when it comes to redeeming rewards at the gas pump or inside the store.

I think this is a big YMMV. In my area, Shell is least 10 to 20 cents a gallon more expensive than Safeway/ARCO so you are starting off in a hole right from the start.

I’m assuming that the Shell referrals are a one-time 20 cents off a gallon thing.

That’s true, these are very area dependent. Also, yes the Shell referrals are a one-time deal.

Josh, in regard to the Shell program:

If I understand correctly, this means that by being a Shell rewards member, I’ll get $.03 off per gallon, without any other requirements. I’ll still be paying with my regular cc or with my Shell gc or with cash, and I’ll just scan my rewards card beforehand, and $.03 will come off with no strings attached? And this will work both on the cash price or the cc price?

That’s correct, at least until 12/31/15. Last year it was valid until 12/31/14 before they extended it another year, so it’s very possible they’ll extend it again. If you have over $0.03 off/gal in your account, then you won’t get the extra $0.03 off.

Have to contact Shell constantly because either the program is down for maintenance or it just is not working. I have trouble with this at least 80% of the time I fill up… The 3 cents off is not worth the hassle they put you threw…joined in January this year and have only saved $1.76 because of all the trouble with the system not working…
