OfficeMax & Office Depot ‘Rewards Everything’ (2% On All Purchases Inc. Gift Cards) Is Now Live

OfficeMax/Depot were due to launch their new rewards program on July 1st and the new program is now live. It’s called ‘Rewards Everything‘ and is very simple to understand, you earn 2% on all purchases (including gift cards).

How It Works

You earn rewards on all purchases, but rewards are only earned on the price paid for the item before tax and after deducting all discounts, value of free gifts and the value of any rewards and/or merchandise certificates/cards applied to that purchase. It also excludes delivery fees. The rewards are paid out on a quarterly basis online as a rewards certificate (no cash back unfortunately).

In addition to the 2% back in rewards on everything you also get:

  • $2 per ink/toner cartridge you recycle (up to 10 per month)
  • $2 per review (up to 3 per month)

VIP Member

You can become a VIP member by spending $500 in a rolling 365 day period. In the testing stages members were receiving 3% back on all purchases. Unfortunately this is not part of the newly launched program and has instead been replaced by the following:

  • 5% back in rewards on ink, toner, paper and print/copy/ship/services
  • Free delivery with no minimum purchase (most furniture, oversize and special order items excluded)
  • Exclusive perks:
    • Special birthday offer
    • Free product samples

Our Verdict

I really like simple to understand rewards programs like this and think that most consumers agree as well. Pairing this with a credit card that earns at a high rate on office supply store purchases.

Unfortunately, as part of the national rollout, they capped rewards on gift cards and the like:

  • 3rd party gift cards capped at $200 per quarter
  • Office Depot/Max gift cards capped at $50 per quarter
  • Postage capped at $75 per quarter

This seems too mediocre to get excited about. If the T&C I found apply, it seems there is indeed a limit of $200/quarter on GCs that earn rewards. You can’t redeem the certificate to buy GCs and I couldn’t find if the certificate will expire after some time or not. So basically I can get $4/quarter, that I can’t spend on GCs.

Also in order to get $2 when recycling cartridges, you need to have spent $10 on non-GC purchases that month. It seems a tiny amount, but I haven’t ever spent a single buck besides buying GCs from them, so I am not interested. Overall, I feel this rewards program isn’t worth it for me. I might as well pass.

They do expire the last day of the quarter. I am not registering unless I can find a way to recycle more than a couple cartridges per month.

You get $2 for each ink or toner cartridge that you recycle, up to 10 cartridges per month, when you make a $10 qualifying purchase the same month. You can recycle additional cartridges, but rewards will only be issued on 10.

For every 1,000 points earned in the Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards program you will receive a reward certificate in your online account by 10/31/2017. Point balances less than 1,000 become worthless.

Point balances less than 1,000 expired on 6/30/2017 as per the Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards Program Terms & Conditions.

So this is pretty worthless for gift cards. Fingers crossed they keep their periodic instant $20 off $300+ deals, although the last one was only $10 off $300+.

Limit of earning rewards on first $200 third party gift card purchase per quarter and $50 Office Depot/Max gift cards per quarter.

Yep, the very small cap per quarter on rewards for purchases of gift cards max of $200 gift card purchase) kills it for what some of us already enjoyed as VIP. Think of it this way, they’ll give you rewards for only 4 x $200 vgc per YEAR. This doesn’t mean you can’t buy more than that, but you just won’t get the OM/OD rewards for more than $800 worth of third party gift cards per year. So, basically this is rewards change is a big negative for me.
