  • For example, your transaction will not qualify if it is not made directly with the merchant. In addition, in most cases, you will not receive the statement credit if your transaction is made with an electronic wallet or through a third party or if the merchant uses a mobile or wireless card reader to process it.
  • By adding an offer to a Card, you agree that American Express may send you communications about the offer.

Our Verdict

BJ’s does sell third party gift cards (at least it does online, but purchases need to be in-club for the 5% offer). A lot of them are discounted online, not sure if that applies in-club as well. The membership deal is basically free membership if you’d spend $25 in club anyway, so pretty good. Obvious that American Express aren’t too happy with Costo leaving them and other warehouse clubs see this as their chance to try and grab some market share. If anybody knows what BJ’s range of giftcards is like in club and if they are also discounted, let us know in the comments.

Tip – when I redeemed the “50% off new BJ’s Membership + $25 BJ’s gift card” offer last month, I asked them to use the $25 BJ’s gift card to cover the $25 membership fee, and they happily complied. This left a a balance due of about $1.07 for taxes, which I made sure to pay with cash so that they wouldn’t have a card on file to automatically renew my membership next year. I got an email a few days later asking me to put in a credit card on the website, as they weren’t able to enable “AutoRenew” for me, which indicates that was successful.

Just FYI – I went ahead and signed up with AutoRenew and they gave me a $5 off coupon. Nothing special, but it worked on paying for the vanillas.

Hey, anytime you can get that fee back, cheers! 🙂

My concern would be if the transactions could be done in an overlap like that. Not every employee (anywhere) will do the same as another. I hope I can figure out how to be “sweet” enough to do this as that is cause for an overt “Sweet!” on the spot! 🙂

Thanks for sharing your cash for balance, too. That caused the reply which was worth noting, as well.

Thanks! 🙂

I work there, please for the love of God do not buy gift cards there. Home office will close your account before you can even blink. We have a massive credit card fraud problem

So you think they won’t like having a bunch of legit purchases? You should find a new line of work.

I don’t misuse the promotions/club membership.

Seems the concern over the fraud is one they should focus on lest they become a publicized example like Target.

They have an extensive set – I should have taken a pic today, but definitely have Vanilla Visa and Vanilla MC, in $25, $50, $100 and $200 denominations. Same for Amex GCs, I believe.

Lots of food – from memory I saw Chipotle, Burger King, ITunes, etc.

Just as a followup – I cleared my nearest store and traveled to the next closes here in MA, and they had zero prepaids, so YMMV.

The local club does not have anything over $50 in Vanilla GCs. Same for Amex, if my memory serves correctly.

I was targeted for this promotion months ago. Because of the expiration date, I chose to wait to closer to where my DD’s temp membership expired. Wonder if I could add a GC purchase to the tab where the membership is being transacted to get an overlap?

BTW, the 5% for $100 is offered over time until one reaches the max spend. I do $100 GCs per visit, since I have other CC promos to consider with time frame rules.
