Gas Points Details

Here are the gas points details. Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon.

  • Max discount in some areas is $1.50. In other areas, there might not be any max. (I believe Martin’s does not have the max either.)
  • You have 30 days to use the points. The day of purchase is Day #1.
  • Points can only be used at partner Shell stations. You can redeem the points in a different area from where you got the points, but only if that Shell station is a partner. Check out the gas locator for Stop & Shop and for Giant for exact listings of which Shell stations are included.
  • See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
  • Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.
  • Pro tip: Use a Shell gift card and you’ll usually get the cash price; it’s especially worthwhile to get the lower cash price when using fuel points.

Our Verdict

Pretty good deal for those who need Staples gift cards, especially if you have a card that earns a grocery bonus.

In the best case scenario, the 10x fuel points would amount to a 20% discount off the Staples gift cards (besides the credit card points) which is pretty incredible. But of course most people don’t work out for the best scenario: you might already have fuel points from previous promotions, you might have a small tank which can’t fill up to 20 gallons, and your Shell might be more expensive.

If you are frequently taking advantage of fuel points like this, it may be worth investing in a gas can or several. I max out Kroger fuel points often so I’m paying pennies per gallon. The four five gallon fuel cans I have let me drive off with an additional $50+ worth of fuel every fillup.

*lol 🙂 Yup, good idea — the problem is the cans themselves. I now have four of them — three of them with barely functioning pour spouts. In the process, of dealing with these miserable EPA mandated absurd cans, I can comprehend the generic “rage against guv’mint” that got us our current President. (same poor, easily breaking can design available at AAP & Walmart — and once the springs fail, or pop off, you’ll end up routinely spilling lots of gas — defeating the presumed purpose of the idiotic designs.)

Seriously folks, anybody come across an economical, dependable can design that meets EPA requirements? Somebody could make a “fortune” here.

We bought six 5 gallon cans off of amazon that have been great. Someone also recommended a siphon and it’s been wonderful filling my tank using the cans and siphon. Very easy, just a little mess on the hands. The cans are pricey but I figured they were worth it. I don’t want gas spilling around in my trunk when I’m driving back from filling up. My car holds 15 gallons. My rewards are with Giant which has a limit of 25 gallons a fill up. I take 2 of these when I go and when I put them back into my car, I have a second tank that is almost full.

I wheel over a recycle can with a flat lid and put the tank on there to refill my car. It’s tall enough to be above my tank. A few plunges with the siphon and it drains quickly on it’s own. Then I just put the lid back on and empty the rest into the tank with the lid nozzle.

100% agree!!!! I can “force” 20 gallons into my Maxima, but now point in leaving the other 5 here in PA. It’s like literally throwing away cash. I have 5 – 5 gallon jugs myself. Barely paid anything for gas these past few months. I’ve done estimates of how much I’m saving on gas, and most of the time, it beats any credit card sign on bonus!
