[Expired] Giant, Stop&Shop, Martin’s: 2x Fuel Points on Visa Gift Cards Next Week [7/13-7/19]

This deal has expired and is no longer available.

Update 7/14/18: Numerous readers note that this deal is not working as advertised. Requires manual adjustment which is a pain.

The Offer

Stop&ShopGiantMartin’s (ad page 8)

  • Get 2x fuel points on the purchase Visa gift cards at Giant, Stop&shop, and Martin’s.

Gift cards generally don’t earn fuel points at all at Giant/S&S/Martin’s, but occasionally they release offers like this to get points on gift card purchases.

The Fine Print

  • Valid 7/13/18 – 7/19/18 (begins Friday, July 13th)
  • Must use store card to get and use the points
  • Be sure to double check that your local store is running this offer before buying
  • “We now accept credit cards for the purchase of Visa, Mastercard, and American Express gift cards”

Gas Points Details

Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1,000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon.

  • Max discount in some areas is $1.50. In other areas, there might not be any max.
  • You have 30 days to use the points. The day of purchase is Day #1. (Giant PA and Martins might expire at the end of the following month.)
  • Points can only be used at partner Shell stations. You can redeem the points in a different area from where you got the points, but only if that Shell station is a partner. Check out the gas locator for Stop & Shop and for Giant for exact listings of which Shell stations are included. (Giant PA and Martins might only be valid at their own gas stations.)
  • See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
  • Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.
  • Pro tip: Use a Shell gift card and you’ll usually get the cash price; it’s especially worthwhile to get the lower cash price when using fuel points.

Our Verdict

These fuel points deals come out often in the summer traveling months. Readers have said they enjoy the heads-up so we’ll post now and repost when it goes live.

I’m going to buy more VGC. Does anyone know if the gas reward point adding issue has been resolved?

At least in my area (MA), it worked fine today. Seems there is a cap of $1.50/gal, however. Bought 2 $500 VGCs with a City TYP card that had a bonus 1k TYP promo for $200/mth, so that made it worthwhile to cash out for a student loan rebate.

How do you maximize the fuel point earned from Giant with Shell Gift card? I mean the fuel point can only use one time. If your Shell gift card doesn’t have enough balance, it’s kind of waste.

2 cars pump together, max at 20 gallons which is $30. But Shell is not supposed to let customers do so but always YMMV.

I take a gas can. My car holds about 15gallons and then I pump 5 into the can and put it in my wife’s car at home.

I hear you. I have a bunch of Shell gift cards with small balances. I guess I’ll use them when these offers run dry and all I have is the small FR discount.

It helps to get larger gift cards. I’ve seen $100 ones advertised, but all I’ve seen in stores where I can get discounts (e.g. with Amex offers at Lowe’s and Best Buy) are $25 and $50. So I buy the $50 ones and get 2 or 3 fill ups per card.

When this program first came out there was a Shell station near me that didn’t participate in the Stop & Shop partnership.

I looked yesterday and that station is now showing as participating on Stop & Shop’s site. It’s possible this happened once Fuel Rewards partnered with Stop & Shop Gas Rewards.

Is it likely that if a station takes Fuel Rewards that they also participate with Stop & Shop?

Have any of you encountered a station that took Fuel Rewards but the Stop & Shop rewards DID NOT work?

Why not use FR (after linking to S&S) instead of S&S alone since you get the extra FR 5 cents off per gallon in addition to the S&S points you earn?

Back then I was ignorant about the program so I wasn’t sure if all stations that took FR also took S&S. I know better now obviously.

It’s too early. They should have some gap in between these deals.
I just filled up my gas tank for free from the MC deal.
Does anyone knows what happens to the remaining fuel points if your point total is more than the discount total?

Thanks  Chuck
I was getting worried.
I had over 5000 points and I could only use 3500 for premium gas 🙂 That means I still have 1500 points and can still buy these Visa GCs for the next free fill-up.

Just remember that points have 30 day expiration (at least at S&S in NJ thats how it is). So you cannot load up more than the gas you can buy in a 30 day period.

MarcoPolo How did you manage to use 3500 points without the 1500 cap? Does the 1500 limit vary by states or gas stations? Thanks.

I believe Giant in certain parts of PA has no cap. I just used up the last of my Mastercard fuel points yesterday. No more paying 1.9c/gallon. Max savings of $1.5/gallon from now on.

Yes, there is no cap where I live.
Only limit is 25 gallon max.

It varies, but at Giant in Central PA, any remaining discount will be applied on your next gas purchase, up until the expiration. I had over $12 off fuel around this time last year during the 3x/4x promos.

Anyone had experience with using AMEX like BCP to earn 6% at Giant to buy VGC?

collider

July 8, 2018 11:35

I use BCP to buy gift card like Amazon, Shell, ebay. All of them earn 6%, but never tried VGC. By the way, is that possible to check AMEX cashback quickly like chase (chase can check when the transaction posted)? Seems AMEX can only check after next billing cycle.

About a week after the transaction posts, you can see the reward cash back amount in the new activity interface by clicking on the transaction

I use BCP at S&S for VCG and MGC all the time and always earns 6 (4.4 if you consider the annual fee)
