Our Verdict

I don’t think any American Express cards would earn any category bonuses at Universal Studios, so the maximum you could get is 5x Membership Rewards points. I’m also not sure if purchasing directly is the best way to get the cheapest tickets, but if it is and you have plans to visit Universal studios anyway then this is a good deal.

This isn’t the first time American Express have worked with Universal Studios, they also offer increased cash sign up bonuses on the Blue Cash cards ($125 and $200, versus the standard $100 and $150 bonuses normally offered).

Fun “trick” for getting well discounted tickets to Universal (and Disney) is to buy the Universal gift cards in advance, (say with the recurrent 4X fuel points promotion via Kroger), then take cards with you to Orlando and buy tickets at entrance. (Ironically, they won’t let you buy tickets on line with their own branded gift cards)

For Kroger (or its affiliate chains), those of us who can buy 35 gallons at a time (two car trick plus can) and get minutes on our Kroger i-wireless phones AND get the 3+% via Amex blue…. the discounts add up nicely. The math works out in my case to approx. 25% off. (and we now have the Universal annual passes now to show for it) 🙂

I live in Orlando, work for Disney & have an annual pass for Universal. Buying directly from the theme park is the only method I recommend. There are only a couple of truly reputable ticket resellers & your discount will not be very large if you are getting legitimate tickets. If a ticket deal is too good to be true – it is! Look into Florida-resident tickets, military, & AAA. If you don’t fit one of those categories, plan on paying close to full price. Theme parks are not like hotels where you can sometimes find a killer deal, unfortunately. Keep in mind that you need a park-hopper ticket to get on the Hogwarts Express and you have Express included with stays at the deluxe on-sight Universal hotels. Those you might be able to find a decent deal on!
