Update 8/16/25: Calling in method to get 70,000 miles no longer works, I think that makes it more likely this end date is accurate.
According to a reddit user in a now deleted post the Barclays American Airlines card will be discontinued to new sign ups 0n 9/30.
Barclays will stop offering the AAdvantage Aviator Red Mastercard on 9/30. The current 50k sign on bonus with no annual fee will be the final opening bonus offer the card will offer before closing for good.
Their source for this information is as follows:
My brother works as a FA for the airline and sent me screenshots of the internal comms. Given the sensitive nature of the screenshots, I’m not going to post it here but I will pass the word along
If true I suspect we will get confirmation sooner rather than later. The public sign up bonus is 50,000 points but it is possible to get 70,000 points by calling in 866-951-7197.
No working link?
Here is a link to get 70,000 miles
Thanks, Traveler! I jumped the boat and signed up both me and my P2 via this link. Using almost identical info, my P2 got instant approval while I went into pending review yesterday (8/19). This morning, received a call from Barclaycard and essentially asked for nothing but confirm I am an alive person :). Without any further info, I got approved as well.
Do note the 70k offer does NOT waive the 1st year annual fee ($99)
Verdict: not nearly as good as the 60k with no AF, even if that one guy’s flight attendant brother is correct
I received the bonus In Nov 2023 and canceled the card in Sept 2024. If I applied for this card would i be able to get the bonus?
I downgraded my red card last month, and just got approved for a new one yesterday with the 70k bonus. .
I cancelled this card last week, so this one might be my fault guys
does anyone have a DP on getting the Citi AAdvantage Plat shortly after getting the Barclays Aviator
P2 applied for both same day when the news came out earlier this year and was approved for both – of course that’s different that shortly after but I don’t know of any issue there.
I tried same day as well. I got declined and called the reconsideration line twice (once right after the rejection and again after I got the letter). They resubmitted the application the second time but got rejected again. I’m at 2/24 & 800+ credit score
Different banks. Shouldn’t be an issue.
I see upon login today I have $18,200 spend out of $20,000 before Oct 31 to earn the companion certificate. Suppose what was posted here will not change these featured benefits as Barclay’s call it.
With a Southwest CP I wasn’t really planning on going for that $99 AA companion certificate but with 2.5 months and a mere of regular $1.8k in spend I guess I’ll aim for it.
Really was planning on cancelling this card and getting a SUB for a Citi AA card which I haven’t held in years. Don’t want a forced product change to mess that up.
It would seem to make sense to turn off applications a full calendar quarter before the transition to Citi starts.
I believe a prior announcement said “further information” about the transition would be forthcoming in September (or October).
Eager to see what happens to my Aviator Silver. I’m hoping Citi converts it to an AA Executive card and lets me keep the $199 annual fee. 😉
most likely citi will refresh AA and intro new cards. AA silver will become mid-tier $350. AA exec will prob be $695.
Will you still be able to earn AA points after the card is discontinued?
Signups closed doesn’t mean the existing cards immediately lose their benefits. The expectation is that Citi will take over the existing accounts, so your Aviator card will become some sort of Citi AA card.
