Aimia/Aeroplan Rejects Air Canada Offer, Will Partner With Porter

In case you didn’t already know Air Canada spun off Aeroplan (the current Air Canada loyalty program) in 2002 as a separate entity, Aeroplan was eventually sold to Aimia who are the current owners. They have an exclusive contract with Air Canada until June 29th, 2020. Air Canada has previously indicated they would launch their own competing program then and Aeroplan has announced their plans post Air Canada exclusivity in some detail recently.

Since then Air Canada, TD, CIBC & Visa made an offer for Aeroplan that has since been rejected ($325 million offer and Aeroplan wanted $450 million) & Oneworld also displayed interest. Today Aeroplan has announced a partnership with Porter Airlines. Porter airlines will begin issuing Aeroplan miles in July 2020 and they will make up 60% of seats available for redemption for Aeroplan members. Somehow I still don’t think this saga is completely over just yet.

I wonder how many ppl would actually use Aeroplan after 2020. I feel like most ppl get Aeroplan is because of air canada and star alliance
