Alaska Airlines Flight Pass: From $49 Per Month (California, Nevada & Arizona)

Alaska Airlines has launched something called ‘Alaska Airlines Flight Pass‘. This is a monthly subscription starting from $49 per month and provides flights within California, Nevada and Arizona.

There are two membership tiers and they are as follows:

  • Flight Pass: starts at $49 monthly
    • $49 per month for one round trip every two months
    • $99 per month for one round trip every month
    • $189 per month for two round trips every month
  • Flight Pass Pro: starts at $199 monthly
    • $199 per month for one round trip every two months
    • $399 per month for one round trip every month
    • $749 per month for two round trips every month

The major difference between the two is that with regular Flight Pass you must book flights 14 days before the flight and with Pro you can book up to day of departure. You basically get the number of credits listed above each month (e.g one every two months, one every month or two per month) then pay $0.01 + $14.90 in taxes and fees. Although sometimes the flights will be more than $0.01. The routes that are available are as follows:

They also lock you into a 12 month commitment. I could see this being useful business travelers with regular routes or even for somebody living apart from a loved one. Overall it does feel clunky and it’s difficult to know how often flights will be priced above $0.01 + one credit as that could completely kill this deal, because of that the 12 month commitment seems like a stretch. I’d love to hear from any readers that decide to give this a go in the comments below.

It does not include a checked bag so the costs will exceed the costs of a sale Southwest flight anyway. I will be skipping it for that reason alone. Southwest with its 2 free checked bags beats the plan costs if you are checking two bags to your destination. Also, there is no insurance available for cancelled flights etc. Nope!! Not worth it.

A lot of people crapping on this offer in the comments. Here’s who this is useful for – people that take regular round trip flights within California on weekends when fares tend to be high. Our family in NorCal does 6 or more trips to SoCal every year. And we are tired of driving.

Issue – you can’t sign up a kid. This won’t work for families. Hopefully they make a change.

Can you accumulate the flights? So could you on month 12 use 12 round trips on the $99 plan? That could be useful.

Honestly, I feel that if the minimum period is 12 months, companies should not be allowed to advertise at $49 pm.
This is $588 per year.

Might come in handy for someone who has money and fucking hates it.

I guess this could be a nice gift for a college student or maybe a parent who wants to visit a student. Otherwise maybe someone with a second home. Still seems like the marketing team at Alaska was pretty bored.

Would definitely consider it if it had more than just one destination airport in the middle of nowhere from BUR, which is five minutes away from where I live. Not worth it for me.

I do a SNA-SFO RT 8-9 times a year. This might be useful if I had the option to buy up to 1st for a fee like you can with premium. I wonder if the price of the sub will trigger the AMEX airline incidental benefits. With a Platinum card, that knocks off one-third the cost of the lowest sub.

“Credits are valid for a limited time—they expire once your next batch of credits is deposited in your account.”
“Most flights are included in your subscription at a fare of only $0.01, but a few may require a higher fare. ”

I really don’t see the benefit of signing up. Why would I lock myself into this?

According to the FAQs (flight booking section), the $14.60 in taxes and fees is per leg, so that’s actually $29.20 per round trip. You can only book round trips with this pass, so Alaska advertising $14.60 without saying that it’s per leg unless you dig deep into the FAQs feels a bit wrong to me.
