Alitalia Devalues Miles Without Notice – Doubles Miles Required For Some Flights

Update: reader Lrdx points out that the award chart we posted is their multicarrier award chart (via Point Me To The Plane). They also have have this award chart:

italy-award-chart

USA-Italy return economy was 80k, now 50k, business was 200k, now 80k (less than half?!)
Italy EU1/2/3 economy was 30/40/45k, now 20/25/30k

Italian airline Alitalia has just made a no notice change to their award chart. The new award chart can be viewed here (or below), keep in mind this is for ONE WAY flights rather than the round trip flights previously shown:

Our Verdict

Round trip flight from USA now costs 100,000 miles + taxes and fuel surcharges. This is horrible news, especially for anybody that transfer miles from American Express during the current 25% transfer bonus. Let us know about your thoughts on this change in the comments.

Very limited US presence, so not a big loss i guess. Heck, no PDX-FCO non stop hehe

Apparently it’s only the partner redemption that was gutted, but for Allitalia flights its a *massive* upgrade?

If this is true, they just want you to fly them, not partners..

Business return was 80k + massive YQ before, I don’t see a positive change.

I tried to do a dummy award booking for JFK-FCO, for a Jan 20 + 22 return on economy on AZ608 + AZ609 costs (25000 miles + $5.60) + (25000 miles + $139.16). Change AZ to DL miles go to 50k.

I don’t have any Alitalia miles and I doubt many of your readers do, but if this is no notice davaluation is allowed to stick, it will only embolden other airlines. #racetothebottom

100K plus tax/fees and YQ. Yikes.
