Our Verdict

Keep in mind the Pro can only be hardwired, but the ring 2 can be battery or hardwired. I’d probably go the refurbished ring 2 over the pro, but might also depend on what you prefer looks wise as well. I imagine most people already have an Echo dot from other various deals as well (useful for setting up a chime sound inside your house in my opinion).

The reason why they have so many refurbished units for sale is because they don’t clearly disclose that there is a $3 monthly fee to use them. I bet you 99% of the returns are because of this. Why pay a monthly fee when you can get a Wyze camera that works just as well for a fraction of the price and not have to pay that fee?

If anyone is looking for a cheap solution for just monitoring your front door and doesn’t want to shell out for a monthly subscription to save video, etc., Wyze cam is a great option. There are all sorts of mounts on Amazon for both indoor and outdoor use, no subscription required for 30 day rolling cloud storage for videos captured on motion detection, and video quality is more than adequate, among other things

I’ll tell ya, I have a Ring Pro. Video doorbells are quite nice and this is no exception. It even passed the spouse ease of use acceptance criteria which is key. The one thing this sorely lacks though is despite being wired it still only saves videos on movement and it does a poor job at that. This is because it’s like $3/mo for service vs $10 I think for Nest. Mine is hardwired which was a real PITA getting the voltage step down just right.I regret not getting a Nest now. Those are always recording and, and after checking out a friend’s the tech is pretty much superior all around. If you don’t mind spending the extra monthly fee and really care about being able to access all footage, it’s way better. Also reason you go for the Pro is size. I have a 90’s built suburban house and even the relatively thin Pro barely fit. The Ring 2 on other hand is freaking massive and definitely doesn’t fit for homes that have a typical small press doorbell mounted in and around the door frame. I suppose that’s a preexisting wired doorbell issue though and not for people going with battery powered/don’t have a doorbell already.

Ring Doorbell 2 refurbished for $89 is not that great of a deal.
Yesterday 7/7, HSN had a brand new one plus a second battery for $160.

I would want an extra battery included at the $89 price.

If you don’t have the unit hardwired and you are recharging the battery, the unit is useless.

The 2nd battery comes in handy.

I installed my Ring doorbell in early March and it’s got 25% left. So it’s about 6 months life on battery before needing a quick recharge. Far from useless.
