American Airlines: 5,000 Mile Web Specials (Including Transcon)

Update 11/20/19: Looks like this is available again. Hat tip to Travel is Free

The Offer

  • American Airlines is having another unannounced web special award sale. This time you can find domestic flights for 5,000 miles one way, including routes such as Los Angeles to New York City.

The Fine Print

  • Valid on flights from November 2019 to October 2020

Our Verdict

Not as good as the recent New Zealand/Australia deal for 10,000 miles round trip, but these should still be useful for a lot of readers. These web specials usually last less than 24 hours and routes can often get booked out quickly so I’d recommend booking ASAP if interest.

Is there a way to be notified of these sales without waiting for blogs to post?

Lord Dima

No, just stumble upon them. I think AA have yet to even formally acknowledge that these exist or have a dedicated page for them.

AA is just unloading crappy routes/married segments. Most of 5K fares I’ve found require an long (3+ hours) or overnight layover.

Edit: I take this back. Some ‘undesirable days’ have good connections.

This describes how the entire AAdvantage program works….

I thought so too but looked at PHX->PHL direct on a whim for a friend visiting. She was looking at $600 cash fares and instead got 5k one way and 8k return for the exact flights she wanted (Wed-Sun). A massive win and made me much more interested in taking a second look.

Any example of a transcon for 5k?

Justin

RDU to LAX with 1 stop. Several dates in January. I didn’t find the non-stop AA flight for 5k though.

Thanks, I fly out of GSO/CLT often

Justin

These flights I found had connections in CLT so maybe CLT-LAX would work non-stop.

These stuck around for a while last time. I was still booking 5-7k tickets a week later. Don’t just focus on transcons, check any flights you thought of taking – I got tickets between San Diego and Tulsa and Reno and few others seemingly random places.

Also, booking round trip can sometimes end up being less than two one ways. Sometimes the prices go up or down by the end of booking process vs what’s shown in the initial results.

too bad not bringing back the 5k flights to Hawaii. have been checking religiously over past weeks and it never returned.

Big thanks Doc for sharing. Got 5 round trips and two one ways from middle of country out to Cali for next summer for 75k total. Well over 3cpm redemption value.

Thanks Doc! Found a 5k flight out of my city to Houston that otherwise would always be too much $$$/points. Now I can cancel a Southwest flight that required a drive.

No, also, some are 6K (DCA to LAX), basically just search what you are interested in and see what you get.

My earlier post on this topic with a link to an AA website didn’t make it through the spam filter but google “AA award mapper” and play around with sample dates (try a non-holiday Tuesday in the month you want to travel), and select “Continental US” after selecting your home airport. I’d start by searching one way for one ticket with an 8000 mile max spend. Then pick another off-peak day and see if any different routes pop up. This will help identify which routes from your hometown are likely to work. When you then do a route-specific search, go for the whole month calendar option.

Probably goes without saying, but these are AA’s Economy Web Specials, which cannot be changed after booking. Eg: you can’t book a route and later change the dates (like you can with most AA awards).
