Last year we saw American Express offer generous retention bonuses for those that call in to cancel a card. We are again seeing those offers, mostly on annual fee cards (but also on non annual fee cards). Some of the offers are things like the annual fee being refunded on the Platinum cards (up to $595) or 50,000 Membership Rewards on those points. Amex platinum retention “offer”: use MR points at 1cpp (69500 points total) for the annual fee. I have been an Amex member for 12 years, and Platinum for the last 2. Never missed any payment. This is worse than no offer, as I think I lost my shot at getting an offer next year.
Asked for a retention offer in the chat; took the 10k after $2k in 3mo offer.
This was my first anniversary with Amex Gold, and the retention offer had not been available until the AF posted. I could’ve HUCA a few more days, but I didn’t want to do that during my trip. I also don’t spend too much, so I need to free up my spending a little bit to use Amex Platinum when Amex Platinum AF posts in a few months.

Called in today for a retention offer on my Amex Plat. Received an offer for $550 statement credit with $4000 spend, OR the option to use 55,000 of my own points to pay my annual fee. Took the statement credit, obviously.
Having a hard time to figure out which one I want to be honest especially if the $4000 spend comes with a 3 month period. The 55k points is ~150 off the annual fee right.
Chatted in to cancel my Delta Gold Biz. I got and accepted a 200$ statement credit with no spending requirement. I barely used the card at all this year (second year having it)
Got 50K retention offer with no spending requirement last year (12/01/2020) on my schwab plantinum card. Just chatted again this year and they offered $150 statement credit with no spending requirement. I took it.
PS: I still have the $550 annual fee.
