At the start of October 2019 American Express stopped accepting applicants for the American Express Ameriprise Platinum & Gold cards. A few days ago readers began receiving letters stating their Platinum Ameriprise cards would become Vanilla platinum cards. Ameriprise Gold cardholders have now also started receiving letters stating that their cards will become American Express green cards as of March 26th, 2020. On this date the $150 annual fee will be charged and the benefits will become available ($100 CLEAR credit per calendar year & $100 Loungebuddy credit per calendar year). If you haven’t already received the sign up bonus on the green card, I assume this product change will make you ineligible so it would be advisable to cancel before the March 26th deadline. I also personally don’t think the green card is worth keeping long term, so I’d be cancelling before this date regardless.

My Q is if I would b otherwise eligible for the regular gold offering if I either cancel now my Ameriprise gold or If I allow them to downgrade me 2 green. They offered me over the phone to move up to gold but then I would miss out on the bonus. Question is there even a chance I’m eligible for reg gold bonus after having Ameriprise gold card?
The 45K Green card w/$2K spend thru referral is a great way to pickup the card well at least for a year – then upgrade card to Gold/Plat if you get a decent upgrade offer. Would be sweeter if it was FYF.
How would get an upgrade offer? I don’t want to keep green at the end of first year but if I am offered gold I can definitely take it. But I also have a gold so not sure if they will offer it

It make sense that they’d convert the Ameriprise Gold card to the Green card. The Ameriprise Gold isn’t comparable to the actual Amex Gold card. It only earned 2 MR Points per $1 spent at airlines and US restaurants.
For those deciding to keep the card, it’ll actually be an upgrade. However, I don’t think the Green card is worth keeping unless you’re an active user of CLEAR.
