Original post: American Express has announced plans for reopening and expanding centurion lounges as well as introducing the ‘The Centurion Lounge Commitment’ (health and safety protocols for COVID-19).

Reopening Plans

Centurion lounges will begin to reopen on October 5, 2020. To start with both the Philadelphia and Seattle lounges will reopen with other lounges to follow (no firm dates given for the other lounges).

Lounge Commitment

This is just American Express’ fancy way of saying health and safety changes due to COVID. The changes will be as follows: socially distanced seating, reduced capacity, increased cleaning frequency, requirements to wear a face covering when entering the lounge, served food instead of buffets, and more.

Expansion Plans

These expansion plans will be completed in 2021, no firm dates given.

  • LGA lounge will double in size and relocate to the brand new Terminal B. This will include a family room, additional workspaces, private telephone rooms and views of the NYC skyline.
  • LAS lounge will increase by nearly 9,000 square feet to a total of 13,400 square feet. This will include additional multi purpose areas, new telephone rooms and newly newly designed reception and workspace areas

They also said they are still working towards opening new lounge locations in New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport, London’s Heathrow Airport and Denver International Airport (previously announced but delayed).

Ha, got me. As I was reading the article I said to myself “and no news on DIA.”

“The Centurion® Lounge at LAX is not offering in-lounge seating or dining and instead is providing grab-and-go pre-packaged food and beverage options for Card Members to enjoy outside of the lounge.”

And it’s only open 7a-3p…not even sure it’s worth checking in to the lounge right now.

Completely agree. Sitting at the Admiral’s Club at Lax term 4 with my box of disappointment from the Centurion Lounge that I can’t even eat here because…it’s too dangerous to eat in the lounge? Wonderful experience.

The SEA lounge also is listed as Grab and Go only. Last Wednesday when I was there, they still let us come inside and sit down, we just could not eat the grab and go item in the lounge. Apparently it was ok to eat at the gate though, or on the plane.

Wait, I apparently completely missed the memo on the LAX Centurion Lounge finally being open. When did that happen?

I am at MIA and the closed the bar at 6:30 pm and closed the lounge at 7pm. The lounge was packed and everyone had to leave.

Vegas is being expanded and still under construction. Otherwise I agree.

Atlanta has to get a Centurion Lounge. Delta has so many lounges here, where I don’t think a Centurion lounge will even affect them.

Two Centurion Lounges may be needed with how huge the concourses are here.

Delta doesn’t want the competition. Delta and Amex don’t want to cannibalize the delta reserve card.

I will get a platinum card when they open up the Denver centurion lounge. Who knows when that’ll be though…

It’s better to get it now because you’ll get the extra $120 ($20 mobile and $20 streaming for Oct, Nov, and Dec 2020).

Wonder if ATL or ORD will be first to get a centurion lounge. Wild to me that the busiest and third busiest airports in the US don’t have centurion lounges while #12 (CLT) does.

Delta probably doesn’t like the idea of a Centurion Lounge in ATL as it would create unwanted competition in lounge quality, and Amex probably doesn’t want to cannibalize its Delta Reserve card that gives sky club access.
