American Express Auto Enrolling Some Existing Business Cardholders Into Paperless Statements

American Express has sent out an e-mail to some existing business cardholders informing them they will be enrolled in paperless statements and will no longer receive a paper statement. American Express states in the e-mail that this was done because they have noticed “your business has been getting a lot of use out of your online account lately”. Users that receive this e-mail will still receive paper billing statements with closing dates in February 2021, March 2021 & April 2021.

This is obviously a cost cutting exercise and I can imagine some business cardholders will be unhappy with this change as they often like to keep both physical and electronic records.

I feel like a second-class citizen when I deal with Amex. First time card member since December. My Business Cash got lost before the shipping stage and they fumbled around mailing the replacement. Never got an offer for overnight delivery. I got my card 3-4 weeks after I signed up for it. I had account issues with an employee, getting them to fix it was like pulling teeth. To add insult to injury their business websites barely work and their Amex Business app is dead on arrival. Don’t believe me? Look up “Amex Business” on the Play Store. I get it, times are rough but I’m so annoyed that I’m just going to leave 1 star any time they ask for feedback.

I don’t care for paper statements but I can see why you’d want one. Paper is less shaky than whatever their website does.

So wonderful to see that many others value paper statements as much as I do.

It’s real easy to stop – call up Amex, tell them you need the paper statements on Amex letterhead for record retention requirements. They’ll give you some hot air about accessing them online, repeat that you need them on their letterhead for documentation. You don’t even need to get into any specifics, it’s none of their business. After about 30 seconds of trying to convince you they’ll change it for you.

Ignore the Email, don’t click any links in it and they will just keep sending the paper.
This happened to us with Synchrony CC.

No, these emails don’t ASK if you want to enroll in paperless statements, they TELL you that you were already AUTOMATICALLY enrolled. There’s no link you have to click; it’s informing you of something Amex has already done at their end.

This is different from anything Amex has done before, and it’s from anything any other bank has done. So what happened to you with Synchrony is totally irrelevant to this.

Your only recourse is to CHANGE IT BACK to paper statements.

If Amex really wants to cut costs on paper statements, they should really trim the fat from the mailings. Every month, it is no less than five or six sheets of paper, even though it should be two maximum. The excess pages are nonsense advertising new merchants accepting Amex, plus Amex seems to need to change terms and conditions about every other day, so they need a few pages to do that. No other credit card company seems to have this problem.

THIS!!! Amex sends sooooooo many pieces of paper needlessly. The bills are 5 pages of useless crap, and one page of actual bill. Then they send 5 or 6 pages of “changes to your cardmember agreement” twice a month, too. Before they go shoving “paperless” bills down consumers’ throats, they need to go on a fucking diet. When they send a bill, send just the bill – it should rarely be more than one piece of paper. LEAVE OUT THE USELESS AND UNWANTED MARKETING CRAP. And STOP with the constant updates to terms and policies. Amex has always treated mailings as if they were not just “free” but they look at every potential mailing as an “opportunity”. Spam spam spam spam spam!

Amex should do the same as other credit cards/banks provide an incentive (i.e. $5 credit ) for going paperless.
None of this BS about auto enrollment.

Got it too.. chatted with the rep and gave him my piece of mind (mostly for the record, so if it happens again and i miss my payment I will have a stronger case). I know it may sound silly to rely on the paper statements now a days, but with the number of cards I manage I do need a physical reminder to check it out and see if any charges need to be questioned, or it is a time to deal with an annual fee.. therefore, sorry, Amex, you will have to keep mailing it to me until I have a choice 🙂

You need a strong case to waive a late payment? Usually it’s as simple as ask and you will receive.

I got this treatment on one card. It’s easy enough to go change back to paper statements.

Yes, this is obviously a cost-cutting measure, but it’s sleazey: ASK ME if I want to change, don’t just shove it down my throat and blather nonsense that they’ve noticed “your business has been getting a lot of use out of your online account lately” (they’ve “noticed” no such thing, that’s hogwash). Amex, hold the BS, please.
